THE DEAN'S CORNER
Democracy in Action
This past year I watched democracy in action, and it wasn't always pretty.
About 18 months ago, the school board of Shaker Heights announced a dramatic plan to reshape our school infrastructure. Like many systems in Northeast Ohio, Shaker's buildings are aging. With the availability of government money it seemed to be the right time to construct new school buildings whilst knocking down old ones that were becoming very expensive to maintain.
| | | |
The problem was that many of those "obsolete" schools were viewed by their families and alumni as the beating heart of particular neighborhoods, so the first plan - after much back and forth - was tossed out. And now, after many months of work back at the drawing board, we will vote in early November on the revised plan.
As you well know, there are other things on the county-wide ballot that are every bit as consequential as local school plans. In particular, Ohioans will vote on Issue One, which would create an amendment to establish an individual right to one's own reproductive medical treatment, essentially making abortion legal in the state. The Episcopal Church is opposed to any government action that would infringe upon that right, and Trinity Cathedral was active in the acquisition of signatures to get this on the ballot...

THANKSGIVING BASKET DRIVE
October 22 - November 12
Thanksgiving is a time to reflect, with family and friends, on the many blessings we have been given. For some, these blessings are abundant, but for others, they are not. Each year Trinity and St. Huberts in Kirtland Hills provide bags to families at Marion Sterling School, located in Cleveland’s most economically challenged neighborhood. These bags contain all the items necessary to prepare a traditional Thanksgiving meal.
You can help by filling a Trinity bag with our specified grocery items or making a cash donation to help our families. Bags and shopping lists will be available each Sunday (from Oct. 22 – Nov. 12) from a table in the promenade. Filled bags are due back by Sunday, November 19.
Help us reach this year’s goal - 50 bags! Combined with additional bags from St. Huberts, we can feed families in need.
Pick up a shopping list and a Trinity bag or make a donation to Trinity Cathedral (with Marion Sterling in the memo line.)
We can also use volunteers to help prepare and deliver baskets to Marion Sterling.
To volunteer, contact Bill DiTirro at bdt8320@sbcglobal.net

Evensong offers a space of beauty and rest in the middle of each week. First held in the Church of England in 1549, Choral Evensong has been for centuries an evening offering sung in cathedrals and churches of the Anglican Communion.
Trinity Cathedral offers weekly evensong services as the sun goes down, at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday evenings October through mid-May. The service is led on alternating weeks by the Cathedral Choir and the Trinity Chamber Singers. Guest choirs may also be featured. A Conversation with Dr. Gretchen Sisson, Ph.D.
Relinquished: The Politics of Adoption and the Privilege of American Motherhood, October 30, 7:30 - 8:30 p.m., Virtual
In a political moment in Ohio where adoption is often invoked as an abortion alternative, what can we learn from the experiences of women who have relinquished children for adoption? Adoption Network Cleveland is pleased to host sociologist Gretchen Sisson, Ph.D. for a special preview of her upcoming book, Relinquished: The Politics of Adoption and the Privilege of American Motherhood (Macmillian, February 2024), and Trinity Cathedral is proud to be a partner in this virtual event.
Dr. Sisson will share insights from Relinquished that illustrate birth mothers’ reproductive decision-making, their life-long experiences of adoption, and why these stories matter for us in Ohio. The event will begin with remarks from the author, to be followed by a discussion and Q&A moderated by Kate Livingston, Ph.D., birth mother and founder of Ohio Birthparent Group (active 2010-2017). Click here to register.
