How do you decide when it’s time for a haircut? Last night I was pinning the sashing to the block rows for the shop hop quilt (it’s looking pretty darn good - I think you’re going to like it!). Carefully as usual, while at the kitchen counter I centered the strip, pinned section by section, pins about 2” apart… Once I had it as it should be, I gathered up the piece and headed to the sewing room. I got a bit too close as I leaned in to set the pinned row on the machine. A bunch of the pins got caught in my humidity impacted curly hair. Of course, they came right of the fabric, but not out of my hair. Kind of like when a bug flies into curly hair, although no noise other than a few choice words. I looked pretty darn silly as I tried to shake them out! After gathering the pins from the floor, I realized the real issue - I needed to pin the whole thing over again! Definitely time for a haircut…

Wishing you a productive sewing week with pins only where you intend,

Mary Beth

This Saturday (5-2-26) those in our beginning of the month pieced Saturday Sampler group will meet at 9:00am. We will share a look at new things in the shop, share details about upcoming events, and then move on to the next block in the series. The technique discussion this month will focus on pressing, on how to press to make your piecing easier and more successful. Don’t forget your block from last month for show and tell - we love seeing all the different versions of the blocks!

The Southwestern PA Shop Hop is just around the corner! Be sure to stop in soon to purchase your event passport. The passport is your ticket to fun at eight regional shops. During the May 11th to 16th hop we will share a pattern for a portion of the event progressive quilt, as well as the setting directions we created for the blocks, and an applique design that can be used instead of the plain setting blocks in the pattern. There will also be technique demos, goodie bags, and treats here - sure to be lots of fun at this stop!

Upcoming classes ~

Only days after the last Simple Whatnots meeting, Kim Diehl’s newest fabric collection arrived - almost perfect timing… Flower Pot includes twenty prints, most featuring, as you might expect, petite flowers. Some of the prints I recognize from past groups, others are new to me. In all cases, the colors are spot on - look for Kim’s rich beige, taupe, salmon, red, gold, green, and blue shades. These are the perfect prints for Kim’s patterns, but also for anything needing a range of classic color and style. Fabric $14.99 per yard

Playing with Panels Market Tote

Saturday ~ May 9th ~ 10:30am-2:30pm

One of the most popular items in our Three Rivers Quilters show booth was the Playing with Panels Market Tote. It’s quite easy to understand why - the tote is stunning! Bonnie has been kind enough to rearrange her schedule a bit so she can teach the class in just a few weeks. In class you will work on constructing the 14” high, 20 1/2” wide by 6” deep bag. She will show how to work everything from the handle she constructed for the piece, to creating the pockets (including one with a zipper), to adding the touches that make for a professional looking finish. The stylish, roomy bag is going to become your absolute favorite tote.

Fee $28.00 (fee is for instruction - pattern and supplies required for class)
