Our wonderful FAM with Italy With Class to Sardinia started with flying into Olbia. To have an authentic and real taste of the area, we began deep in the Barbagia region; one of the world’s blue zones as it’s a place with a very high population of centenarians. Here, in the midst of Oliena, sits Hotel Su Gologone, our home-away-from-home for the first two nights.

We began with a lovely site inspection, aperitivo and welcome dinner with traditional Sardinian food. It was the perfect way to begin, as we were up early the following day to have a wild experience! We explored the Sardinian Supramonte which are a region of mountains in Oliena around the Su Gologone River in the Lanaitho Valley. This river goes deep beneath the limestone rocks to a depth of 135 meters and has been explored by a number of divers throughout the years. We walked to the archeological site of Sa Sedda’e Sod Carros, which dates back to the Bronze Age, and then we explored the beautiful and wondrous Sa Ohe Cave. To punctuate the afternoon, we took a steep drive up the mountains (not recommended without a driver/guide) to a lone shepherd’s home where we admired the baby goats, as the adults had gone to pasture, and delighted in a meal prepared by the shepherd himself…definitely one of the most rustic experiences I have personally ever had! We even saw a brand-new baby that was just an hour old and reiterated the beauty of nature “springing” to life.
