Dear Friends,
It may not look like much in the photo, but this steel beam is a big deal. Our contractor, Robert O'Donnell, and his team brought this beam into the church via a window on Monday morning. They created a staircase of scaffolding to walk it up to the balcony, and they installed it along the floor of the opening in between the choir loft and the tower area. Impressively, the beam was installed before the church opened for tours at 10am.
This Sunday we will celebrate All Saints' Day in church, and on Monday Robert and his team will return to begin their construction in the balcony in earnest. I keep thinking about last year on All Saints' Day, when we formally announced our organ project and the Honyman Hall project (what a day!). One year ago, I told you that we were having our last Sunday with our old pipe organ - that the case and pipes would be removed in the following days. This year, we will have our last Sunday with what remains of that organ - the console and the speakers that have accompanied us since last fall.
It might be a coincidence that All Saints' Day heralds exciting new developments at Trinity Church, but it might not be. There's something about remembering all those the saints who have gone before us that serves as fitting inspiration as we embark on the next iteration of our life and ministry here. There are days where the challenge ahead of us seems daunting, but as we will sing on Sunday, O blest communion, fellowship divine, we feebly struggle, they in glory shine. We are privileged to do the work of this generation, to listen for God, to have the courage to act on what we hear. We do it for those who will come after us, and we do it for all the saints, who from their labors rest.
I look forward to the work ahead.
With gratitude,
Meaghan

Thanksgiving Meal for a local family
The Trinity Outreach Team is partnering with Lucy's Hearth to sponsor a family, an adult and 2 children, for Thanksgiving. We will be collecting non-perishable holiday food for their Thanksgiving dinner. The suggested list is below.
Also needed are gift cards from our local markets or Walmart for the family to purchase the perishable meal items- turkey, fresh produce, eggs, etc. Cards can be given to Cissie Ferzoco, Nancy Murray or left in the parish office. We will then purchase the gift cards.
As we are supporting one family please check back for updates as we will adjust the list of needs as donations come in. There will be a spot for donations in the Tower Room and a printed copy of the list of requests. Please drop off your items no later than Sunday, November 15th.
Suggested non-perishables:
Stuffing mix
Gravy
Seasonings
Canned vegetables
Cranberry sauce / Applesauce
Dessert and bread mixes
Festive holiday decorations
Thanks for your caring and support!
Christmas Giving Tree
Trinity will be supporting 23 local youth for the Christmas season. We will be releasing more information about this exciting outreach opportunity in the coming weeks so please keep an eye out for updates and specific requests.

Silver Tea Advent Calendar
The Silver Tea Craft Group has been meeting faithfully on Tuesday afternoons to ready their wares for the Silver Tea to be held on December 5th, in the Hawes Room. But before you see this year’s creations, you have the opportunity to bring home something special!
The crafters will welcome your donations for entries into a special drawing for this year’s Advent Calendar. This wooden calendar will be on display each Sunday from now until November 15th, when the winner will be drawn during coffee hour. What a great hostess gift this would be for that Thanksgiving gathering, or something to be treasured year after year.
The suggested donation is $5 per entry, or 3 entries for $10.00. You need not be present to win!

Our Legacy...A Historic Churchyard
Outside the north and west walls of our church building, lies the sacred ground of our churchyard that has been widely described as, ”the most quintessential English burial site in Newport.” The Colonial era graves are positioned in the traditionally oriented east-west direction, with the occupant’s head to the west, so that on Judgment Day, the deceased can sit up and face the rising sun — a metaphor for the greeting of Christ upon His return. The term, “put to rest,” is symbolized by a head-stone and foot-stone, encompassing a single grave, that resemble the headboard and footboard of a bed. The yard measures roughly 150 by 60 feet, enclosed by a black wrought iron fence, hedges and a newer columbarium to house and memorialize cremated remains. There are approximately 234 recorded graves and inscriptions dating from 1704 to 1987 — not including interred ashes. This piece of earth is an integral and organic foundation to all that resides above.
Popular culture has always perpetuated an otherworldly, if not creepy, aspect to cemeteries — especially at this time of year! We, at Trinity, think of this hallowed element of our church campus as a “Harvest Ground” — a place where the departed are gathered home — under the orange of pumpkins, blankets of white snow or bright colors of flowers, as a particular season provides. Our quiet, stately, lichen-covered churchyard stands as a testament to our past — a lasting memorial to the individuals whose life stories form part of our shared history and the final resting place of the “great cloud of witnesses” who have gone before us. Their legacy of faith connects us to the past even as we, in the here and now, “run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”
Longtime parishioner, Charlotte Johnson, who has been so devoted to the history, maintenance and accurate recorded information of the churchyard states, “my involvement in the graveyard began when someone criticized a previous rector for not putting flags on our veteran’s graves.” Because most of the war dead buried here are from the 18th century and were subjects and citizens of three nations — on opposing sides of the Revolution — Charlotte teamed with Prof. John Hattendorf to develop an ongoing honoring tradition and a self-guided tour. Annually, on Memorial Day and Veterans Day — coming up on November 11 — the graves are decorated with the appropriate flag corresponding with each veteran’s national allegiance. In the case of the British graves, there is the appropriate 1606 Union Flag, bearing only the crosses of St. George (England) and St. Andrew (Scotland). The Betsy Ross flag with the circle of 13 stars decorates our Patriot graves — while the Stars and Stripes adorns the graves of the more recent American veterans. Finally, there are three French Revolutionary War graves that bear the Royal Standard of the King of France.
We honor and remember those who are always with us.
