Dear Friends,
Two weeks ago I snapped this picture after I said the words of the dismissal and before everyone started filing out of the church after worship. The sight of these umbrellas (and one pair of booths) filled me with surprising joy. It symbolized to me your commitment to be at Trinity on a Sunday morning - even in torrential rain!
It looks like there is a chance that we will have a third Sunday of rain this weekend, and I hope that once again you'll pull out your umbrellas and your rain boots to come and worship with us. This weekend marks the actual 300th anniversary of the first worship service held in this church. For many years Trinity held a Founders Festival on this weekend - I remember people dressing in period attire when I was a child. In our Trinity 300 planning we briefly considered another such festival, but instead of looking towards the past, we decided to look to the future. We named this week in our calendar "Founding the Future."
At church on Sunday you'll be invited to dream about the future of Trinity, and write down our prayers and hopes for the generations that will follow. It's almost impossible to imagine what life will be like in Newport and at Trinity Church 100, 200, or even 300 years from now. And yet, as we reflect with gratitude on the last 300 years of this church's ministry, it seems only right that we pray for it's future - whatever that may be.

Blessing of the Animals
Our 10 a.m. service (weather permitting) will be held on the outdoors and your pets are invited! Bring a lawn chair and your pets, stuffed animals, or pictures of pets for the blessing during our service.
There will be no Sunday School that morning so children can enjoy our furry guests!
Please Note: The service will take place on the lawn next to Honyman Hall, and will not be livestreamed.

Silver Tea Crafting
Continues
Attention Silver Tea Crafters! One of Trinity’s longstanding traditions, our annual Silver Tea event, will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2026, from 1– 4 PM in the Hawes Room.
Do you have a secret talent that we don’t know about? Do you do needlecraft, sewing, knitting, painting, woodworking, jewelry making, ceramics, mixed media, or any other type of craft? If so, we are looking for your donation of handicrafts to be for sale on the artisan table at the tea!
Join us on Tuesday afternoons at 12:30 PM in the Hawes Room. Either bring your own project to work on and enjoy good company and fellowship, or help us to complete items that will be available for sale on that day. Questions? Contact: Chris Pimentel or Deb Lengyel

Calling all Bakers!
Please help us make our upcoming Pumpkin Patch (Oct 7-31) be safe, fun, successful and delicious! We need volunteers to bake small and large Pumpkin breads and Cranberry breads, cookies, and jars of Apple butters etc for us to sell. Kindly bake and place cooled baked items in individual ziplock bags. Please mark your goods if the contain nuts or chocolate and also mark if they are gluten free. The items can be delivered to Trinity any day the Patch is open. We will especially want lots of freshly baked items on the weekends! Thanks for contributing your time and baking talents towards this important Trinity community event!

Our Legacy …
A Bond of Centuries with the US Navy

Just like the waters of the world’s oceans, the historic, centuries-old relationship between the US Navy—rooted in Newport’s evolution as a vital American strategic naval hub—and Trinity Church runs very deep. In fact, Trinity has played a significant role in the history of three navies —the British Royal Navy, the Marine Royale of France and, of course, the US Navy. Our longserving, second rector from 1704 to 1750, James Honyman, who guided the construction of our church building, was a chaplain in the Royal Navy until 1701 before leading the Trinity congregation. Our churchyard holds the remains of numerous service members, including French naval officer, Admiral Charles-Henri-Louis d’Arsac de Ternay, who commanded the naval fleet that brought General Rochambeau’s army to Newport in 1780 during the American Revolution.
In the 19th century, while the US Navy established a permanent presence in Newport, heroic naval figures such as famed brothers, Matthew Calbraith Perry and Oliver Hazard Perry were baptized at Trinity. Rear Admiral Stephen B. Luce, who founded the Naval War College in 1884, had a close personal connection to Trinity, as did many faculty, staff and students through the years. Admiral Luce’s funeral service was held at Trinity on July 31, 1917. During WWII, the church had a pew reserved for the president of the NWC, Vice Admiral William S. Pyle. His successor, Admiral Raymond Spruance had the same reserved pew and his daughter was later
married here. The enduring presence of the “Home of Thought,” as the Naval War College is respectfully known in naval circles, is ever-present as each and every Sunday the processional is led by the crucifer bearing the cross—a memorial gift in honor of Admiral Luce.
On Sunday, October 11 these bonds of faith, respect, affection and gratitude will grow even deeper as we honor servicemen and servicewomen at Sea Service Sunday. Trinity will celebrate the Sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen and all who serve, protect and defend this country at our 10:00 worship service. For those who have found solace and sanctuary here over the generations, we will dedicate this sacred time and space to honor and memorialize these past, present and future connections. Representatives from three branches of the United States Armed Forces will attend and participate in the service and liturgy, including Rear Admiral Darryl L. Walker, president of the NWC and Chaplain, David L. Duprey, CDR, USN, who will preach. Trinity has planned this service as part of our Trinity300 Tricentennial celebrations
and the date was scheduled to coincide with the 251st birthday of the Navy on October 13.
