Trinity Sunday

May 31, 2026

8 AM and 10 AM Worship

Dear Friends,

Months ago I received an email from a journalist from the Religious News Service asking if I would be available for a visit and interview for a story she was writing. Adelle Banks came to Newport, and meant to be with us for a Sunday service, but then the weather report showed potential for an historic blizzard, so she had to leave town early to stay ahead of it. (Probably a wise decision, as I'm sure you remember that snow!)

Adelle's article was published yesterday, and the timing couldn't be better! As we prepare for our Tricentennial Celebration on Trinity Sunday this weekend, her article serves as a lovely reminder of our history and all the reasons it matters that Trinity Church is still here, loving and serving God in Newport, RI.

I am so looking forward to our worship on Sunday. We will gather for an historic event of a different kind: beautiful, joyful worship, led by the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, that will commemorate 300 years of faith, worship, and community in our church building.

I cannot wait to celebrate with you.

With gratitude,

Meaghan

Our Legacy...

The Trinity Choir

As Trinity Sunday arrives, we end another season of splendid music with choir, organ and instruments. We give thanks and gratitude to our Music Directors, Fred Jodry and Michael Bahmann for their expertise, dedication and guidance—we are twice blessed!

Since the arrival of the first organ in 1733, Trinity has enjoyed choirs in many forms over the centuries. The first mention of a choir is from 1810, when “The organ loft was to be enlarged to accommodate the singers and chanters of sacred music.” A boy choir was first instituted in 1860 and many children and adults have contributed to the transcendent way in which we worship through music over the generations. Sometimes, simple and spare and, at other times, complex—with rich harmonies that rise like incense in the morning light, carrying the heavy burdens of the earth into the rafters of grace.

Below, is a montage of historic and recent Trinity images of those who, through music, engage both heart and mind, making praise and prayer more poignant and joyful. One among us—for over 70 years—voice raised in faith-filled song, was Stan Brown, who retired from the choir last year. He remembers how well-pleased the boys were in the 1950’s not to be made to wear the scratchy, ruff collar any longer (harkening back to the 16th c. Tudor era)! He sang, as did so many before him, with a commitment that helped Trinity choir maintain its long-held excellent reputation. His photo is the final one.

As the famous phrase, attributed to St. Augustine imparts, “he who sings, prays twice!”

 Panel Discussion

Trinity Church in collaboration with the Newport Restoration Foundation invite you to a celebration of Queen Anne Square’s 50th anniversary.

Beginning in 1969, Trinity Church and the Newport Restoration Foundation worked closely with the Newport Redevelopment Agency to create a “square recalling the best of the nation’s colonial past for the inspiration of present and future generations.” The square was dedicated to the public in July of 1976 by Queen Elizabeth II and has remained an important communal space for public gathering and memory.

Join us for a conversation with a panelist of historians, scholars, and preservation leaders to reflect on the legacy of Queen Anne Square and the impact of the mid-century preservation movement on the city of Newport—and the United States.

A reception with light refreshments and jazz music presented by Puddingstone featuring the Alan Bernstein Quartet will follow the discussion.

While this program is free and open to all, we ask that you kindly rsvp here

This program is part of Trinity Church’s 300th anniversary celebrations and is a Newport250 event, commemorating the story of our nation.

The panel includes:

We continue collections for Lucy's Hearth, this week. Lucy's Hearth is a 24-hour emergency and transitional shelter in Newport County serving children and their families who are experiencing homelessness. We have supported Lucy's Hearth many times through our Pumpkin Patch, and they have a list of food needs that are tailored to families in particular. If you can bring any of the items from this list to church with you in the coming weeks, we will be sure to deliver the food to Lucy's Hearth. If you have questions about this effort, please email Diane Myers.
