The Trinity Church e-Tower

for the

Sixth Sunday of Easter

May 10, 2026

8 AM and 10 AM Worship

Message from the Rector:

I started my sermon last Sunday with a reference to our weekly Bible Study that happens here at Trinity. In conversations with folks since then, I have realized that there’s not much information out there about the nature of this Bible Study! I want to take this chance to tell you about it – and invite you to join us.

We meet each Sunday in the Glenn Family Center starting at 9am. There’s a small group of us at the moment – anywhere between 5 and 10 of us, but we’d be happy to make more space at the table should anyone want to join us.

When I arrived at Trinity, the practice at the Bible Study was to look at the readings assigned for that day. We’d take the bulletin from the 8am service and read through each reading. A handful of months ago, someone suggested looking to the week ahead. That’s what we’ve been doing since – I print the readings for the following week, along with a couple of commentaries on the passages, and we spend time reading through the Old Testament, New Testament, and Gospel passages.

Our conversations have two components. Those of us that know something about the context of the scripture passage will share some information (sometimes that is me, but many other times the knowledge comes from the group!). Then we spend some time talking about what we’ve heard in the passage. We discuss how it speaks to us, and how it resonates in our modern context. When we need to, we openly discuss our challenges with the text or how we have to wrestle with the words of scripture.

No previous knowledge or study is required to join us. You could come and simply listen, or join in the conversation. Questions are welcome.

Oh, and there’s coffee.

All are welcome to join us. Please email me if you have any questions.

I look forward to seeing you Sunday and – maybe – at Bible Study!

With gratitude,

Meaghan

PS. Full disclosure, the photo I've included is the Outreach meeting, not the Bible Study. But the gatherings share a close resemblance!

Our Legacy … The Reverend James Honyman

The name “Honyman” is a venerated and familiar one at Trinity. We have a parish building bearing his name, several memorials, an oil painting portrait, and his and his family's final resting place—a place of prominence—in our churchyard. Reverend Honyman is remembered and memorialized here … and for good reason.

James Honyman was born in Kinneff, Scotland, in 1675 and became a British naval chaplain in June 1699. Before arriving in Newport, he ministered to several pirates, captured in the colonies, including Captain Kidd, on board the frigate HMS Active. When visiting Boston in 1701, Honeyman went on leave and was asked to be the celebrant at his first service at Trinity, Newport. Here, he met his future wife, Elizabeth, the daughter of one of the parish's benefactors, Robert Carr. Honyman left the Navy upon returning to England.

Soon after, the Society of the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) sent him back to America. He first went to Long Island and then to Newport, where he married and settled, becoming rector of Trinity Church for nearly fifty years, from 1704 until his death in 1750. Under his leadership, Trinity became a central institution in the Colony. One of his great achievements was supervising the construction of our current church building, which we celebrate this year. It was built between 1725 and 1726.

Honyman was instrumental in establishing several other Rhode Island parishes and in early efforts to provide religious education to enslaved people and Native Americans in Newport. He is noted for baptizing numerous enslaved Black adults and children who attended services. “As the years passed, the parish continued to grow, despite the unaccustomed ‘frowns’ of government on an Anglican congregation.” Anglicans were often viewed with suspicion in early 18th-century Newport due to strong local preference for religious dissenters, such as Quakers and Baptists.

Beyond the pulpit, Honyman was a figure of significant social standing. He was involved in the intellectual life of the town, and his family remained influential in Newport for generations. His son—also named James Honyman—served as Attorney General for the Colony of Rhode Island.

It's May!

We continue collections for Lucy's Hearth, this week. Lucy's Hearth is a 24-hour emergency and transitional shelter in Newport County serving children and their families who are experiencing homelessness. We have supported Lucy's Hearth many times through our Pumpkin Patch, and they have a list of food needs that are tailored to families in particular. If you can bring any of the items from this list to church with you in the coming weeks, we will be sure to deliver the food to Lucy's Hearth. If you have questions about this effort, please email Diane Myers.

A Note on Wild Worship

Wild Worship, or Worship in the Wild, offers prayer and simple song, encouraging quiet exploration of the glories of God’s Creation as found on the exquisite grounds of the Norman Bird Sanctuary. Spring marks a time of new growth, new beginnings, and hope for all who share “this fragile Earth, our island home.” Please join us, with children and/or grandchildren as we walk, look, share and pray.

Save the Date

We will welcome the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church as our presider and preacher on Trinity Sunday,
