The Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost,

August 4, 2024

8:00 a.m. & 10 a.m. Services

A Jazzy Sunday

“Jazz speaks for life,” said the Rev. Martin Luther King when he attended the Berlin Jazz Festival in 1964. “Jazz,” he said there, “. . . is triumphant music.”

Newport is full of Jazz this weekend. Yes, there’s the Festival at Fort Adams (Lynn and I are excited to attend our first one), but Trinity Church will be full of Jazz on Sunday morning and afternoon. Melchior Bahmann will be joining his father Michael in leading our music with a jazz sensibility and triumphant spirit. And, in the afternoon, Melchior’s renowned Trio will offer a special concert in Hawes at 3 p.m. Don’t miss it!

Dr. King understood Jazz as fueling the “freedom movement.” Jazz “has strengthened us with its sweet rhythms when courage began to fail. It has calmed us with its rich harmonies when spirits were down.” May our spirits be similarly lifted!

Timothy Safford, Interim Rector

Listening for God's voice in the Sunday morning Bible study

When we finish a scripture in church, the reader says, "Hear what the Spirit is saying to God's people." Through meditating on a passage of scripture, we hear God still speaking. This is the goal of the Sunday morning Bible Study which now meets in Honyman Hall each Sunday at 9 a.m. Prepare by reading the passages in advance, click here.

Join the Rev. Noël Robinson and Deacon Christine Cassels for a quiet service of reflection and prayer, with communion and the laying on hands for healing.

Community Meal Needs Volunteers:

August 5th, August 26th, and September 2nd

Please join us in serving the community! We have been very busy this year and are serving about 100 guests per meal. We delight in providing a restaurant-like experience for our guests but need your help! Please consider joining the team (we have a lot of fun!) by signing up for the many open volunteer slots here: Community Meal Calendar Sign Up. We always serve on the 1st, 4th, and 5th Mondays of the month. - D'arcy Carr.

UPDATE FROM THE SR. WARDEN:

RECTOR SEARCH PROCESS NEWS

Canon Dena Cleaver-Bartholomew met with the Vestry to review the process Trinity Church will follow as we search for a new Rector. After a period of prayerful discernment, the Vestry has recommended a list of potential members of the different teams. Once the candidates agree to serve, the list will be shared with the congregation. The teams are as follows:

Prayer Team (3-2 people) includes members of the congregation that will develop a prayer to be used during worship, shared on the website and prayed daily by the teams and congregation.

Communications Team (5-6 people) will keep the congregation informed of the status of the search and discernment process.  They will lead the process of updating our website, on-line presence, and the status of the overall search process.

Profile Team (3-4 people) will develop an Office of Transition Ministry Profile which describes the congregation and will be used to match with potential candidates. This team needs individuals with very good writing skills.

Search Committee (8-10 people) will include members of the Vestry and Congregation and will interview the potential candidate and prayerfully consider the best candidate. Their recommendation will be presented to the Vestry and Bishop for approval.

There are two very important Congregational Meetings lead by Canon Dena Cleaver-Bartholomew:

1.   Parish History Event on September 22nd. During this meeting, there will be a discussion about Trinity’s history to create a shared awareness that will assist in the creation of the profile and during the discernment process.

2.   Congregational Conversation on October 20th. During this meeting, members of the congregation will have the opportunity to answer 12 narrative questions. These answers will be used by the Profile team to create the Office of Transition Ministry Profile.

These meetings are very important to ensure we create a profile that properly represents Trinty Church to a potential candidate and defines what we desire in our next Rector. Please plan to attend.

This is the process we will be following to select our next Rector and the teams and Vestry will need your help, commitment and prayers.

If you have questions on the process, please contact me.

Trinity300

2026 will be a milestone of achievements and celebration for our church and the Newport community. The Trinity300 committee comprised of parishioners and leaders of many Newport non-profit organizations composed the following vision statement:

The vision of Trinity300 is to identify, organize and successfully accomplish a series of events and offerings-in the year 2026-in celebration of the 300th anniversary of the building of historic Trinity Church, Newport. Continuing its role as a Welcoming Beacon for our City and beyond, these will include lectures, exhibits, ceremonies, presentations, musical and artistic performances, social gatherings, parties and worship services.

We invite you to consider what you would like to see in this celebration and share ideas with us as we plan the events. Please indicate if you would be willing to volunteer. Please contact Jeff Clark or Bob Smith.
