Wise Men Arrive
I hope you haven’t already composted your Christmas tree and packed away the Crêche scene. By tradition, Episcopal households don’t remove Christmas decorations until at least “Twelfth Night,” which comes this Sunday January 5th this year. And, for the Crêche, it’s better to wait until Candlemas on February 2nd if you aspire to Anglican tradition on such things.
This Sunday, we’ll hear of the mysterious Magi, the wise men (really astrologers) who follow Jesus’ natal star. One of the most intriguing stories in the Christmas story, told only in the gospel of Matthew, they were likely dispatched by Persian kings in the “Orient,” or East, to make peace and pay homage to a new king. Their journey would've taken months. They bring traditional gifts for a king: gold and frankincense, but the third gift—myrrh—is unexpected.
Myrrh is made from the sap of a specific tree that grows along the Persian gulf. A powerful analgesic, it was used to alleviate pain and suffering at the time of death. These wise, Gentile sages understood that Jesus was a gift to the entire world, but whose life would end tragically.
Understanding who Jesus is, and what he means, is what the season of Epiphany is all about. As T.S. Eliot imagined in his great poem, The "Journey of Magi" Jesus is a new understanding, never to be wrapped up and stored in a box, but given away abundantly to a hurting and needy world.

Listening for God's voice in the Sunday morning Bible study
When we finish a scripture in church, the reader says, "Hear what the Spirit is saying to God's people." Through meditating on a passage of scripture, we hear God still speaking. This is the goal of the Sunday morning Bible Study which now meets in Honyman Hall each Sunday at 9 a.m. Prepare by reading the passages in advance, click here.

Stewardship 2025
A big thank you to all of our members who added their pledge this week.
With 105 pledges received to date (12/31/24), your generosity totals over $335K. The Stewardship team is delighted to see that 10 of those pledges are new this year, and many of the pledges are increased over last year.
If you have not yet made a pledge for 2025, it’s not too late. You can make your 2025 pledge online with a click here.
If you need a pledge card or coaching to enter your pledge online, Terry Commodore or Molly, the Parish Administrator, can help with that.

Please consider joining the team (we have a lot of fun!) by signing up for the many open volunteer slots here: Community Meal Calendar Sign Up. | | | Trinity Church Reading Group: Our next meeting will be on January 13 at 5:00PM. In the meantime, we decided to read The Lost City of Z, by David Grann. Mr. Gran researched and writes about the expedition of Percy Fawcett in 1925 into the jungle of the Amazon with the aim of discovering the location of the legendary city of gold as described by the native tribes of that region. | |
