Message from the Rector:
Wow - what a week!
I don't know about you, but I'm becoming a little weary of living through "historic" events. Yet here we are, still digging our way out of unprecedented snowfall in Newport!
The snow has caused us to make changes this week. We were not able to begin our Lenten program, as I had hoped. Please see below for the new plan - 3 classes instead of 5 starting in two weeks. We also scheduled a funeral for Chris Pimental, then realized another day for snow removal was in order.
I imagine that parking might be a little difficult this weekend, but I hope - especially for Chris' funeral - you will try to make your way to Trinity. You might carpool or walk if possible! The Mary St. lot, as of this writing, has been partially plowed, but the spaces for cars is still limited or piled with snow. We are hoping that the warm temperatures in the coming days will help the cause!
I will be out of the office this week, attending the Episcopal Parish Network conference in Charlotte, North Carolina. Noel will be available for pastoral emergencies, and Ali will be in the office for practical matters. I hope to return from the conference with new tools and information that can inform our ministry together!
With gratitude,
Meaghan

George T. Downing Statue
set to be unveiled February 28th
The model of the first statue in Newport to a person of color, George T. Downing, will be unveiled at an oyster reception and presentation at the Newport Art Museum from 6-9pm February 28, a Black History Month fundraiser event hosted by Rhode Island Slave History Medallions. The statue will be placed at the corner of Pelham and Bellevue Avenue in Touro Park.
Robb Dimmick of Stages of Freedom will speak about the importance of recognizing Mr. Downing, a civil rights leader who fought to combat racial discrimination. Sculptor, Vinnie Bagwell, will talk about her process in creating the model. Tickets are available at RISHM.org or at the door.

We continue collections for Lucy's Hearth, this week. Lucy's Hearth is a 24-hour emergency and transitional shelter in Newport County serving children and their families who are experiencing homelessness. We have supported Lucy's Hearth many times through our Pumpkin Patch, and they have a list of food needs that are tailored to families in particular. If you can bring any of the items from this list to church with you in the coming weeks, we will be sure to deliver the food to Lucy's Hearth. If you have questions about this effort, please email Diane Myers.

As we celebrate Trinity's tricentennial year, we plan to offer a monthly reflection on some part of our history. Thanks to Jeffrey Clark and
Dr. John Hattendorf for the content.

Our Legacy: A Royal Replica
The Royal Arms of Queen Anne, currently hanging in the Hawes Room of Honyman Hall, is a replica of the one that proudly hung in Trinity’s first church and in our current church building from the time of its construction in 1726 until 1779, in the midst of Revolution. It was lost over time. A replica was commissioned in 1928 as the final touch to the church’s interior renovation, begun in its bicentenary year. It was affixed above the altar over the Ten Commandments in 1930 just as it had been 150 years earlier. Patriotic sentiment, however, forced its removal in 1931.
It was attempted again in 1956 when it was found in the cellar after an extensive search—crated and dusty! It was placed over the altar to commemorate the dedication of Honyman Hall that year and, again, facing strong and vocal opposition, was moved to its current location where it has been for the last 70 years.
Queen Anne used the motto “Semper Eadem” (“Always the Same”)—which is creatively included on the lower ribbon of the replica—was originally the personal motto of Elizabeth I as an attempt to project and convey stability, steadfastness and unchangeable principles.
