On Giving Up and Giving More

I have already started thinking about what I am going to "pledge" to Trinity Church in 2025. A "pledge," of course, is a sacred promise to support Trinity financially generally, and on the "pledge card," we declare what we'll give specifically in the year ahead. The Stewardship Team is hard at work on the campaign. You'll receive your cards to complete by the end of October, and they are due back on Sunday, November 17.

Right now, Lynn and I are giving $300 a month, which is a little less than 10% of my compensation from Trinity. But can we give more and get to 10%? For us, that's a question of what we're willing to give up. If we stop at Dunkin' and Starbucks less, and maybe only eat out once a week instead of twice, and eat fewer scallops (New Bedford's pride!), we certainly can find another $50, maybe $100.

We've experienced in 40 years of tithing (giving 10%) that we've never lacked for what we need. Our kids went to college. We live in a nice house. Sure, I would not like to drive our 2015 Prius anymore that shakes, rattles and rolls. But every time I go by Starbucks, or the car dealer, and Anthony's Seafood and don't stop but think of Trinity and my relationship with God, I have no want or envy. I feel liberated.

Don't give until it hurts. Give until it feels good. Give until it feels like freedom.

Listening for God's voice in the Sunday morning Bible study

When we finish a scripture in church, the reader says, "Hear what the Spirit is saying to God's people." Through meditating on a passage of scripture, we hear God still speaking. This is the goal of the Sunday morning Bible Study which now meets in Honyman Hall each Sunday at 9 a.m. Prepare by reading the passages in advance, click here.

It hurts me to say this, but we will have to cancel this event if there are not at least 60 people registered by Monday, Sept 30.

2026 will be a milestone of achievements and celebration for our church and the Newport community. The Trinity300 committee comprised of parishioners and leaders of many Newport non-profit organizations composed the following vision statement:

We invite you to consider what you would like to see in this celebration and share ideas with us as we plan the events. Please indicate if you would be willing to volunteer. Please contact Jeff Clark or Bob Smith.
