For the last two weeks, Lynn and I have been traveling through Morocco, celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary. It’s been a great adventure (including camels!) and I greatly appreciate Trinity allowing us this time, which we’ve been planning for years.
I am away this coming Sunday. We’ll be in Philadelphia celebrating with our daughter Sarah as she completes her M.Ed at Penn! Then, I’m back.
I am grateful to all at Trinity who are covering during my absence. To Noël, Molly, Christine, Mark, Fred and Michael, thank you, and thanks to Norris and the vestry as well.
See you on Sunday, May 26!

New Building and Challenge Match Update
Members, you may have noticed the progress that has been made on the new Education and Administration Building. In the last weeks they installed the Belmont Memorial, Wifi, the kitchenette, and started to install the wood flooring. We are moving fast to a July move-in date.
Financially, it is projected that we need an additional $100k to ensure that a mortgage is not needed.
So, thank you to all those who have stepped up to help. We still have a Capital Campaign Matching Challenge to raise $75,000 by Trinity Sunday, June 15th. So far, we have gotten $35,300 in new donations in response to this challenge.
If you haven't yet contributed, please consider helping us raise the remaining funds to complete the new building. Not having a mortgage will make it easier to cover any new expenses related to maintaining and growing our programs.

| | Episcopal Charities work with Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center | |
Here are a couple of real-life stories of folks in Newport whose lives have been helped by grants from Episcopal Charities (EC) to the MLK Jr. Community Center (MLKCC). They have received both annual grants and smaller grants from Charities Now! that distributes funds when and where needed. And I think Charities gave an emergency grant to MLK to replace a freezer, or other necessary equipment. All of our donations to Charities go toward the needs of the most vulnerable in our communities. There is a separate investment that is just for staff and office supplies.
I have a few monthly donations to charitable organizations. Charities get the largest monthly amount – not a huge amount, but enough to remind me of the importance of all the work of Episcopal Charities in Rhode Island. I’m happy to answer any questions or concerns you have about Charities.
Sheila is 60 years old and lives in Newport with her mother (78), and her two adult sons (43 and 33). She was employed as a caregiver but recently lost her job and cares for her sick mother. Sheila shared the following:
“I just recently became unemployed and have been utilizing the food pantry to feed my family. It's a great help struggling to pay rent and car insurance and going to the laundromat with limited income to live within your means. Your support keeps me from becoming hungry or homeless. I'm struggling, but I'm humble. Thank you again.”
Beginning in 2023, MLKCC began providing all the food for our preschool students in-house – including a hot breakfast, lunch, and two healthy snacks daily. We hired a chef and now make healthy meals provided to each child at no additional cost. 10% of our preschool children receive need-based financial assistance to attend. A new child from a low-income family joined our preschool program last October. The little boy was not an adventurous eater and often only wanted sweet treats. Once he was exposed to so many different options of healthy foods served during childcare, and witnessed other children enjoying the foods, he began to eat more. He now regularly tries a variety of new foods. His mother said, “I don’t have to worry about packing him anything, he is such a picky eater...I don’t have to do any meal prep or worry about buying him food to send him to school with.” She shared a story that she was going to make meatballs for dinner one night and the little boy said, “Mr. Richard (MLKCC Chef) makes yummy meatballs for lunch”.

Rector Search Process
As you are aware, we are making progress in our search for a new Rector. The Search Team has been in conversation with several candidates. This is a very important step to ensure we select a Rector that will help Trinity achieve its future goals. One of our challenges, as stated by Rt. Rev. W. Nicholas Knisely during his visit last Sunday, is that there is a very limited number of candidates. This means the team needs to select someone that meets our needs and convince the candidate that we can meet their needs.
As a congregation, we will have a responsibility to ensure the success of the new Rector. As Rev. Tim Safford has stated, early in his career his congregations worked to ensure his success. We will need to make the same commitment to our new Rector. If our new Rector is successful in helping us live our Mission, we will be successful in helping our members and the community.
Here are some actions I think we can take to ensure the Rector’s success: (1) Have open and honest communications with the Rector and other members of the congregation; (2) Be open to change; and (3) Remember that the whole is more important than the one (for us Star Trek fans).
Our mission: We are a Christian community of faith, responding to God's call for us, engaging in the needs of our parish community and the world, and building for the future.
