Scams and Scoundrels

At every turn, we are warned in dire terms and screaming headlines, “Don’t Get Scammed!” The New York Times recently reported on a sophisticated, smart lawyer who recently retired and then was scammed out of $745,000 through a multi-layered, believable scheme.

Members of Trinity Church are not immune. This week, members received text messages, purportedly from me, asking for Apple gift cards. If you texted or called back, the scammers tried to draw you in to send cash because of the urgent need.

What is galling is that the scoundrels put together the scam by combing through the Trinity website and service leaflets for information that creates the illusion of authenticity. I hate that they manipulate our good intentions and charitable sensibility.

REMEMBER, I WILL NEVER ASK YOU FOR MONEY, GIFT CARDS, ETC. THROUGH AN EMAIL OR TEXT MESSAGE. DO NOT RESPOND. IF YOU HAVE A CONCERN ABOUT A SOLICITATION FROM TRINITY CHURCH OR ME, PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE.

Jesus had words about scammers and scoundrels, "Woe unto you who devour widows' houses. . . ye shall receive the greater damnation."

Timothy Safford, Interim Rector

Community Meal Needs Volunteers: August 26th, and September 2nd

Please join us in serving the community! We have been very busy this year and are serving about 100 guests per meal. We delight in providing a restaurant-like experience for our guests but need your help! Please consider joining the team (we have a lot of fun!) by signing up for the many open volunteer slots here: Community Meal Calendar Sign Up. We always serve on the 1st, 4th, and 5th Mondays of the month. - D'arcy Carr.

Listening for God's voice in the Sunday morning Bible study

When we finish a scripture in church, the reader says, "Hear what the Spirit is saying to God's people." Through meditating on a passage of scripture, we hear God still speaking. This is the goal of the Sunday morning Bible Study which now meets in Honyman Hall each Sunday at 9 a.m. Prepare by reading the passages in advance, click here.

Noon Healing Service

Join the Rev. Noël Robinson for a quiet service of reflection and prayer, with communion and the laying on hands for healing.

RECTOR SEARCH PROCESS UPDATE

Please plan to attend the following two very important Congregational Meetings which will be led by Canon Dena Cleaver-Bartholomew:

1.   Parish History Event on September 22nd. During this meeting, there will be a discussion about Trinity’s history to create a shared awareness that will assist in the creation of the profile and during the discernment process.

2.   Congregational Conversation on October 20th. During this meeting, members of the congregation will have the opportunity to answer 12 narrative questions. These answers will be used by the Profile team to create the Office of Transition Ministry Profile.

These meetings are very important to ensure we create a profile that properly represents Trinty Church to a potential candidate and defines what we desire in our next Rector.

If you have questions on the process, please contact me.

Trinity300

2026 will be a milestone of achievements and celebration for our church and the Newport community. The Trinity300 committee comprised of parishioners and leaders of many Newport non-profit organizations composed the following vision statement:

"The vision of Trinity300 is to identify, organize and successfully accomplish a series of events and offerings-in the year 2026-in celebration of the 300th anniversary of the building of historic Trinity Church, Newport. Continuing its role as a 'Welcoming Beacon' for our City and beyond, these will include lectures, exhibits, ceremonies, presentations, musical and artistic performances, social gatherings, parties and worship services."

We invite you to consider what you would like to see in this celebration and share ideas with us as we plan the events. Please indicate if you would be willing to volunteer. Please contact Jeff Clark or Bob Smith.
