Message from the Fred Jodry:
This Sunday at 4 PM, the Choir of Trinity Newport and the Choristers of Newport County will join forces in singing Evensong for the Third Sunday of Lent. Herbert Howell‘s wonderful setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, written in 1935 for performance at Kings College, Cambridge- will be sung - hence their subtitle “Collegium Regale.”
The anthem by Maurice Greene, a colleague of George Frederic Handel is on track with our Lenten study program on Death and Dying- “Lord, let me know mine end.” Other choral pieces include works of Peter Berton, Joanna L’Estrange and Walford Davies.
All are cordially invited to attend. Afternoon Tea will be served after Evensong in the Hawes Room. A Free-will offering will benefit Trinity’s Tri-Centennial Organ Project. Public parking is available in the Mary Street lot, or in the church lot.

LENTEN PROGRAM
Holy conversations about death and dying
The historic blizzard of 2026 interrupted our Lenten program, so we will be adjusting the format and dates slightly.
We will now hold 3 sessions, begining this week on March 11 followed by March 18, and March 25
The meal will begin at 5:30pm in the Hawes Room, and the program will run from 6-7:30 pm.
Children are welcome at the meal and childcare will be provided in the Glenn Family Center during the program.
Please RSVP if you plan to attend so we can be sure to provide enough food!

Join the Outreach Team
at Trinity!
Out
When I was a child, every Lent my Episcopal church in Greenwich, Connecticut gave out “mite boxes” to Sunday School kids. Over the forty days of Lent, we dropped our pennies, nickels and dimes into the small cardboard boxes, and at Easter, we presented our full “mites” at the altar, to be used for charitable purposes. From a young age, we imbibed the Christian belief that we were called to care for our neighbors and those suffering in the world. Episcopal children no longer put their dimes and nickels into mite boxes, yet there are many opportunities for all of us to serve Christ in those who suffer. Trinity Church has had a strong tradition of outreach to those in need in our community, and the wider world, both through raising funds for financial contributions and through actual service, in programs like our Community Supper.
Over the years some Trinity parishioners have worked tirelessly on such projects. Now we are forming an Outreach Team to support those current efforts and to try to discern possible new ways of serving Christ on our island and in the world. Our first meeting will be on Tuesday March 24th at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity. All are welcome. If you would like to participate in this initiative, please contact me at 203-215-0135 or email me here.
Thank you,
Elizabeth Stevens

We continue collections for Lucy's Hearth, this week. Lucy's Hearth is a 24-hour emergency and transitional shelter in Newport County serving children and their families who are experiencing homelessness. We have supported Lucy's Hearth many times through our Pumpkin Patch, and they have a list of food needs that are tailored to families in particular. If you can bring any of the items from this list to church with you in the coming weeks, we will be sure to deliver the food to Lucy's Hearth. If you have questions about this effort, please email Diane Myers.

As we celebrate Trinity's tricentennial year, we plan to offer a monthly reflection on some part of our history. Thanks to Jeffrey Clark and
Dr. John Hattendorf for the content.

Our Legacy: A Royal Replica
The Royal Arms of Queen Anne, currently hanging in the Hawes Room of Honyman Hall, is a replica of the one that proudly hung in Trinity’s first church and in our current church building from the time of its construction in 1726 until 1779, in the midst of Revolution. It was lost over time. A replica was commissioned in 1928 as the final touch to the church’s interior renovation, begun in its bicentenary year. It was affixed above the altar over the Ten Commandments in 1930 just as it had been 150 years earlier. Patriotic sentiment, however, forced its removal in 1931.
It was attempted again in 1956 when it was found in the cellar after an extensive search—crated and dusty! It was placed over the altar to commemorate the dedication of Honyman Hall that year and, again, facing strong and vocal opposition, was moved to its current location where it has been for the last 70 years.
Queen Anne used the motto “Semper Eadem” (“Always the Same”)—which is creatively included on the lower ribbon of the replica—was originally the personal motto of Elizabeth I as an attempt to project and convey stability, steadfastness and unchangeable principles.
