| | | Stroke Survivor Throws Out Ceremonial First Pitch at Cubs Game |
It was an exciting night to remember when Advocate Health Care partnered with the Chicago Cubs to give Ashley Lunardini, a stroke survivor, the experience of a lifetime while recognizing #StrokeMonth.
Ashley’s story started in August of last year, when she began experiencing what she believed to be symptoms of a seizure including sharp neck pains and dull headaches. Days later, the symptoms became more severe as she began experiencing blurriness in her left eye and that evening Ashley nearly lost all capacity to speak or move. She described the feeling in her body as “electrical.” Upon admittance to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, doctors told her she was suffering a basilar artery stroke. Doctors found several dissections in the arteries of her neck, which caused the clot that caused the six strokes in her brain. Ashley was 39 at the time of her stroke and led an active and healthy lifestyle with no family history of strokes.
Once discharged, everyday tasks became milestones in her recovery. She felt constant pressure in her brain and struggled to visibly focus when outside. Nine months later, Ashley achieves a new milestone every day and is on her way to making a full recovery thanks to the care team at Advocate Illinois Masonic, including neurosurgeon Dr. Demetrius Lopes.
A few weeks ago, Ashley experienced the full VIP treatment at the Cubs game with a custom jersey, player meet and greet, and get to watch batting practice up close before reuniting with her care team. She then took the field to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
You inspire us, Ashley!
May was Stroke Awareness Month and every second counts to get a second chance. Advocate Health Care offers a free online assessment t hat estimates one’s personal risk for stroke and how to modify it!

Our latest flavor is inspired by our favorite Pop-Tarts—and our favorite way to enjoy it. Frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon served buttered, warm, soft, and gooey right out of the toaster. We took that exact time-stopping moment and suspended it in ice cream. Buttery crumbled pastry pieces. A cinnamon-caramel swirl. And sweet cream bursting at the seams with brown sugar and cinnamon. Our tribute to the best thing to spring out of a toaster is available in scoops and pints in shops and for delivery or pickup via the Jeni’s app starting on 6/22. Also available at jenis.com.
