Both the residents and businesses in our neighborhood are responsible for making Lakeview East as wonderful as it is, and we are so thankful to be a part of this community. | |
Holiday Tree Lighting
It's lit! Mark your calendars for November 28th as we come together for our annual neighborhood tree lighting event. This year, we're thrilled to announce a unique twist – our magnificent tree will shine brightly in the heart of the Clark Street Dog lot for the very first time. Positioned between Clark and Halsted, you'll have the opportunity to admire this stunning tree from multiple vantage points. The first 50 people in attendance will receive a free hot dog!
During the tree lighting, we will have carolers, treats, and tons of holiday spirit to spread. Santa Claus will even be making an appearance! Don't miss this luminous celebration- and bring the whole family! Stick around afterward for a fun party with light bites and beverages at Clark Street Dog.

| | Berlin Closes after 40 Years | |
It's disheartening to hear about the closure of Berlin Nightclub, a venue that has played a significant role in the lives of so many for over four decades. The circumstances surrounding its closure, particularly the demands of Union leaders, shed light on the challenges faced by small independent businesses.
The demands for full healthcare access, substantial pay increases, and pensions for part-time employees, while perhaps well-intentioned, can indeed pose a heavy burden on businesses, especially those operating on a limited schedule of only 25 hours per week. The closure serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between workers' rights, and what is considered fair for employees, and the sustainability of small businesses.
Berlin Nightclub was not just a place for music and dancing; it was a community hub that embraced diversity and provided a safe haven for LGBTQ+ youths and anyone seeking acceptance, a place where individuality was celebrated. The owners, Jo Webster and Jim Schuman, were not just business proprietors but community advocates deeply embedded in the neighborhood by serving on boards, attending neighborhood meetings, and making safety for our neighborhood a priority. Their commitment to fostering an inclusive environment and supporting various lifestyles, ages, races, and genders made Berlin more than just a nightclub—it was a cherished part of the community.
As the doors of Berlin Nightclub close, the memories of the joy it brought to countless people will linger. The impact of the venue extends beyond its role as an alternative dance club; it was a space where individuals could be themselves without fear of judgment. Jo Webster and Jim Schuman's legacy is not only in the music and the dance but in the genuine care they showed for the community they served.
The closure of Berlin is not just a loss of a business; it's a loss of a space that brought people together in celebration of life and individuality. As the neighborhood reflects on the memories created within those walls, there's gratitude for the 40 years of joy and acceptance that Berlin provided. While the doors may have closed, the impact of Berlin Nightclub and the dedication of its owners will be remembered fondly by those whose lives were touched by this iconic establishment. Thank you, Jo and Jim, for the memories and we wish you both a time to reflect on the joy you brought to so many people and to our community. Read more about the closing here.

With a sense of deep emotion, we share the news of the closure of D.S. Tequila Co., concluding a remarkable 14-year chapter on the lively Northalsted strip. This cherished bar and restaurant, known for creating fond memories, serving Tex-Mex delights, and hosting unforgettable parties, bid its final farewell following the last service on November 5th.
Expressing gratitude for the incredible journey on North Halsted, the owners conveyed their appreciation, stating, "We thank you for 14 amazing years on North Halsted! We will be open for special events occasionally through this transition and are actively seeking new ownership for the property. Please reach out to us here for any inquiries," as shared on the D.S. Tequila website. Thank you for all the great times and for always serving up delicious food. Northlasted will forever be impacted by the legacy D.S Tequila gave.

It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of James Bar, the owner of Tax and Accounting. Jim recently relocated his business from Broadway to Sheffield, leaving an indelible mark on the community he served.
Jim was more than just an accountant; he was a trusted advisor and a friend to many business owners in the area. Over the course of 25 years, his expertise and dedication helped numerous entrepreneurs navigate the complexities of finances, save money, and discover new business opportunities. His impact extended beyond the realm of numbers; he was a pillar of support for those he served, fostering lasting relationships built on trust and genuine care. We send our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. Read here for information regarding services.
