In Memoriam: Ryne Sandberg

This week, we lost more than a baseball icon. We lost a part of Wrigleyville. Ryne Sandberg, the legendary Cubs second baseman, passed away at 65 after a courageous battle with metastatic prostate cancer. He was surrounded by his loved ones at home. For fans across the country, Sandberg was a Hall of Famer, A 10-time All-Star, A 9-time Gold Glove winner. The 1984 National League MVP. But for those of us here in Lakeview East, he felt like one of our own.

He played here for 15 seasons, and during that time, he truly became a part of the Wrigleyville culture. Whether you watched him turn double plays from the Wrigley bleachers or replayed his highlights at your neighborhood bar, Sandberg was a constant in our community’s baseball story. And then there was that game in June 23, 1984. Two clutch home runs in the 9th and 10th innings to tie it up and send it into the Cubs’ favor. It wasn’t just a career-defining moment for Sandberg, it was the kind of magic that made people fall in love with the Cubs and with Wrigleyville.

Just this past summer, the neighborhood gathered at Gallagher Way to unveil his statue, marking 40 years since that unforgettable game. Since news of his passing, fans have been stopping by, quietly leaving flowers, baseballs, and notes. It's clear how much he meant to our community. Ryno never needed the spotlight. He led with quiet strength, grit, and a love for the game that showed in every play. His legacy lives on in every little leaguer who dreams of playing under the ivy, in every number 23 jersey at a home game, and in every local who still believes that baseball is about heart. Rest easy, Ryno. You’ll always be part of Wrigleyville.

Wrigleyville News & Updates

Wrigley Field to Host 2027 All-Star Game

We are anticipating that the Chicago Cubs will make an official announcement this Friday: our very own Wrigley Field is set to host the MLB All-Star Game in 2027! The last time the Cubs hosted the All-Star Game was back in 1990, making this opportunity even more exciting. In an ABC7 article released on July 24th, reporter John Garcia stated, "The Cubs and the city have been working on getting the game back for years and have put some $30 million into safety and security updates for Wrigley Field and the neighborhood, including widening the sidewalks along Addison next to the ballpark. They are improvements that would benefit the neighborhood long after an All-Star Game." Executive director of the Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce, Maureen Martino, said, "So this is all in prep to not only make it a safer ballpark all the time, but also to be able to be more attractive to get games like the All-Star Game. The economic impact for the business community could see as much as $250million."
