"Maury Yeston's score for TITANIC is both epic in scale and emotionally wide ranging. The marvelous cast of 32 and the outstanding 30-piece New York City Center Encores orchestra brought Maury's work to life with a thrilling energy and nuance of expression. Our task in lighting the production was to create visual gestures that would both support the energy and nuance of the score in the emotional telling of the story, as well as create a vocabulary that would tell the physical story of the crash and sinking without the means of giant automated scenery as in the original 1997 production (on which I was the associate lighting designer). In collaboration with director Anne Kauffman and scenic designer Paul Tate dePoo III, we created simple yet visually striking moments, including the stark reveal of a blindingly white cyc for the crash and a haunting wall of light using GLP FR10 Striplights, where the cast seemingly vanished as the ship sank. Many thanks to my amazing team - David Shocket, Alex Fogel, Kathleen Zhou, and the entire City Center Team - for their commitment and support in mounting this large effort in a very short span of time."
