As Memorial Day approaches, we will all pause to reflect on the courageous men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

We also hope the weekend provides an opportunity to spend time with family and friends and to enjoy the unofficial beginning of another New England summer.

On behalf of the NHOA, we wish you a safe and meaningful Memorial Day weekend.

NHOA Supports Evidence-Based Glaucoma Care
in State Therapeutic Cannabis Review

The New Hampshire Optometric Association has submitted formal comments to the Therapeutic Cannabis Medical Oversight Board supporting the removal of glaucoma from the list of qualifying conditions for therapeutic cannabis in New Hampshire.

NHOA emphasized that current scientific evidence does not support cannabis as a safe or effective long-term treatment for glaucoma. Effective glaucoma care requires consistent intraocular pressure control to prevent irreversible vision loss, and no study has demonstrated that cannabis can reliably provide this level of disease management. Established, evidence-based treatments — including medications, laser therapies, and surgical interventions — remain the accepted standard of care. Both the American Optometric Association and the American Glaucoma Society do not support cannabis as a treatment for glaucoma.

Call to Action: The public comment period remains open through Thursday, May 28, 2026. NHOA encourages members who support evidence-based glaucoma care to participate in the comment process and make their voices heard.

Deadline for Written Comment: Thursday, May 28, 2026

Send comments to: dhhs.mobtcp@dhhs.nh.gov

NHOA will continue advocating for thoughtful, science-driven policies that support evidence-based care and protect patient vision and public health.
