Rabbi's Message

Rabbi Natan Halevy

BSD

Shalom U’vracha,

The people of Israel leave Egypt in this week's Torah portion. Our sages ask, “Why does it say, ‘It was when Pharaoh sent the nation?’ Hashem took us out of Egypt!” The reason is that Pharaoh literally escorted them out of Egypt due to the great fear he felt following the plague of the first born. After Pharoah realized that the people of Israel weren’t coming back, he had a change of heart. Pharaoh and the Egyptians began chasing after Israel. This led to the miraculous event of the sea splitting.

On a deeper level this event signified more than just the salvation of the nation. On a mystical level, the sea represents the energy of concealment. When Hashem created this world, he concealed his presence in our reality. For a person to have a relationship with and a concept of Hashem, they must strive and make an effort to refine themselves, to improve their thoughts, actions and words. As we each become more fitting vessels, and we each learn how to hold Hashem’s life-affirming energy within us through our lives, we become more aware of Hashem’s presence in all that exists.

This was why the prophets were holy people. Their lives were dedicated to sharing Hashem’s messages about life and to connecting those around them with Hashem. As Hashem split the sea, he revealed His presence in this world.
