Rabbi's Message

Rabbi Natan Halevy

BSD

Shalom U’vracha,

It is interesting that this week's parasha is named Hayei Sarah, “the life of Sarah,” even though the parasha recounts Abraham's acquisition of the Machpelah cave and Sarah’s burial, not the events of her lifetime.

The Zohar discusses Sarah's greatness by comparing her to others: “Eve came to this world and was defiled by the snake [who caused her to sin] thus bringing death to her husband and the world. Noah tried to rectify Eve's sin but became drunk and was defiled. Sarah was able to rectify Eve's sin. As was seen, she and Abraham went down to Egypt and left unharmed. Sarah brought abundant blessings for her husband and her offspring forever.”

Following Sarah’s model imbues all of Israel with the power to descend into darkness and rise up. Sarah influenced Avraham to remove Hagar and Yishmael from their home. Sarah possessed a bit more of the attribute of “justice” than Abraham did. This enabled her to make difficult decisions when they were necessary.

We see Sarah's strong influence even after she dies. Abraham was aging, and Isaac hadn’t yet married. Abraham made his servant, Eliezer, swear that he would only seek among Abraham’s for Isaac’s potential wife. Abraham understood that Isaac needed a special person to help him continue the great legacy that would result in the birth of our nation. The woman Eliezer found was Rebecca, Abraham’s great-niece.

a Beautiful Tree of Life

in memory of

Allon A. Iny, z''l

Tikva and Yoel Iny have donated a beautiful Tree of Life artwork to honor the memory of their dear beloved grandson, Allon A. Iny, z''l. The stained glass mosaic commemorates his light so that "it continues to shine through the leaves of the tree and be a blessing to all those who knew him and loved him."
