Rabbi's Message

Rabbi Natan Halevy

BSD

Shalom U’vracha,

This week’s Torah portion, Parashat Yitro, introduces the concept of the intricate and fair judicial system. The qualities necessary to be a truly great judge are enumerated: “But you shall choose out of the entire nation people of substance, God fearing, of truth, who hate monetary gain, and you shall appoint Israel leaders over thousands, leaders over hundreds, leaders over fifties, and leaders over tens.”

We are limited human beings with a narrow perspective of reality. When coming to judge cases between people, the parties may have completely opposing stories in which each is trying to find favor. In cases dealing with guilt or responsibility for events, the truth can be hard to clarify. Therefore, the judges must be of this high quality of character recounted in the Torah in order to administer the best judgment possible.

The fact that our judges have attained these higher levels of being demonstrates the fortitude of such people. Their inner strength and resolve, and the value they place on life, stands above. Thus their judgment will be of a higher quality than average as well.

The entire system of judges was initiated by Yitro, Moshe’s father in law. He is considered to be an extremely important person on many levels. His own spiritual development and attainment was quite awesome in his own right. Read more online ...
