Monthly News | July 2024

Greetings!

ARI is committed to providing trusted and relevant information to parents, those on the spectrum, and professionals worldwide. We are honored to support the community we serve.

Our online educational resources provide the community with the knowledge to advocate for research and appropriate medical care. We have over 1 million views on our educational YouTube Channel. If you haven't checked out our free online recordings of webinars on a wide range of topics, summer is a great time to visit AutismWebinars.org to register for upcoming talks and catch up on any you may have missed this winter and spring. You can watch the replay and take the knowledge quiz for free anytime.

Did you know that we publish a bi-monthly e-newsletter for obstetricians, nurses, and other physicians? The newsletter, Clinical Research in Autism, lists peer-reviewed studies relevant to their practice. Please tell your healthcare providers about this free e-newsletter. They can sign up at www.ClinicalResearchInAutism.com.

We hope your summer adventures are safe and fun.

The Autism Research Review International (ARRI) -

New Spring 2024 Issue is Online Now

In 2023, our Board of Directors envisioned increasing ARI's impact by expanding access to ARI's award-winning quarterly journal, Autism Research Review International (ARRI). For nearly four decades, the journal has been available in print and, more recently, electronically (PDF). But as part of our mission to democratize information about autism, we knew we needed to do more.

Over the past several months, ARI's staff has been working to make this vision a reality, and we are pleased to announce that the Autism Research Review International is now available online for free at www.ARRIOnline. The Spring 2024 edition is out now.

The print journal is still available by subscription for those who prefer it. Subscribe to Print - ARRI (arrionline.org).

Research Updates

From ARRI:

Maternal vitamin D, multivitamin use may lower odds of autism

Children born to mothers who take multivitamins and/or vitamin D during pregnancy may be less likely to be diagnosed with autism, according to a large study from China.

Xiujie Qi and colleagues analyzed data collected on 1,321 children with ASD and 1,200 neurotypical children enrolled in the China Multi-Center Preschool Autism Project from May 2018 to December 2019. The researchers divided the mothers into three categories: those who took vitamin D supplements, those who took multivitamins (with or without vitamin D), and those who did not take either one.

From ARRI:

Playing “serious” games may benefit children, teens with autism

A new meta-analysis by researchers in Portugal suggests that playing “serious” games—those that focus on teaching knowledge or skills rather than on providing entertainment—can have benefits for children and teens with autism.

In reviewing the studies, the researchers found “a positive influence of serious games on social skills and related domains, encompassing emotion recognition/encoding/decoding, emotional regulation, eye gaze, joint attention, and behavioral skills.”

Participate in Research

Participants needed: Dr. Lauren Moskowitz, a frequent ARI webinar presenter on challenging behaviors and anxiety, is seeking participants for a research study on the effectiveness of an online parent training program for parents of children with autism and co-occurring Intellectual Disability.

University-based investigators frequently contact ARI requesting help finding research participants to add valuable data to our understanding of autism.

Research topics range from sibling differences to school experiences, trauma, adult issues, and more.
