Message from Magnus

Many people assume that nothing much happens on a university campus during the summer. But that is a misconception. Summers are absolutely crucial for our work. It is prime time for writing papers, submitting grant proposals, engaging in STEM outreach activities, running research experiments and for traveling to conferences and collaborative meetings. It’s also vital for planning and gearing up for the new academic year. That said, no matter what your own summer has in store, I hope you all have the chance to take some time to disconnect from the daily grind, experience something new and spend time with loved ones.

Foufoula-Georgiou receives prestigious international hydrology prize

UCI civil and environmental engineering Distinguished Professor Efi Foufoula-Georgiou was awarded the International Hydrology Prize, Dooge Medal at the 2023 IUGG General Assembly in Berlin, Germany on July 15.

DOE awards $3.75 million to UCI Samueli School for research in clean energy technologies

The award is one of 22 issued by the DOE to advance critical technologies for producing, storing, deploying and utilizing hydrogen in support of President Biden's goal of a 100% clean electrical grid by 2035 and net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

UCI to expand Crystal Cove Beach Dynamics courses

Crystal Cove is the world’s most gorgeous living lab,” says Magnus Egerstedt, dean of the UCI Samueli School of Engineering. In June, he was elected to the board of the Crystal Cove Conservancy to serve for a three-year term.

Pete Balsells’ life honored at UCI

Pete Balsells, founder of the Balsells Fellowship program in the Samueli School of Engineering, was honored at a celebration of life event on Saturday, June 10 at UCI.

Discovery through mentorship

DNA can do more than pass genetic code from one generation to the next. For nearly 20 years, scientists have known of the molecule’s ability to stabilize nanometer-sized clusters of silver atoms. Some of these structures glow visibly in red and green, making them useful in a variety of chemical and biosensing applications.

Beall Butterworth Competition results announced

The ninth annual Beall and Butterworth Product Design Competition culminated with an awards ceremony at Calit2 on May 24, and many engineering students received prizes for their designs.
