Over $690 million in funding announced to support science and research

On October 22, Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, announced a major investment, including support for new and renewed Canada Research Chairs, recipients of the Robbins-Ollivier Award for Excellence in Equity, and funding for the Research Support Fund, which assists postsecondary institutions in managing their research enterprise and maintaining a world-class research environment.

The latest from SSHRC and its partners

$2.7 million awarded to 14 recipients of Research on Research joint initiative

A joint initiative between SSHRC, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Health Research British Columbia has awarded $2.7 million to 14 researchers over three years. The initiative, Research on Research, funds projects focused on metaresearch—a field that draws on old and new disciplinary and methodological approaches to test, evaluate and experiment with different aspects of research systems, cultures and decision-making.

Reminder: Registration open for 2026 Canada Excellence Research Chairs competition

All eligible Canadian, degree-granting institutions are invited to register for the next Canada Excellence Research Chairs (CERC) competition before January 21, 2026, at 9:00 p.m. (eastern). Note that nominating institutions must advertise all CERC positions on their public accountability web pages for a minimum of 30 calendar days prior to the registration deadline.

The 2026 Storytellers Challenge is now accepting applications

The new Challenge officially launched on October 21 to anyone 19 or older and enrolled at a Canadian postsecondary institution. Submissions must be no more than three minutes or 300 words and can be in audio, video, infographic or creative writing format. Deadline to apply is January 20, 2026.

Daniel Levitin, a neuroscientist at McGill University, has been researching how rhythm and melody can heal both the human body and mind since the 1990s. Thanks to SSHRC funding. he has since made several key discoveries, including how scientifically selected music can lower a person’s heart rate and blood pressure, and how music can help treat disorders like anxiety, depression and chronic pain.

Improving access to brain health assessment for Indigenous populations

An Indigenous-led research team, funded by a New Frontiers in Research Fund Transformation grant, is working to improve Indigenous Peoples’ relationship with dementia—including through recognizing the signs, getting assessed and securing care.
