Where to find SSHRC at Congress 2025

Join us at Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, to be held at George Brown College Waterfront Campus in Toronto, Ontario, from May 30 to June 6. SSHRC is proud to sponsor the following activities:


  • Relax, reflect and recharge with other Congress delegates at the SSHRC Lounge (across from Registration). Enjoy a comfortable seating area to network, rest between sessions and charge your devices. 
  • Check out a student and postdoc info session on June 2 to learn about scholarships and awards offered through the new Canada Research Training Awards Suite and more!
  • A SSHRC-sponsored Big Thinking panel will examine the intersection of evolving technologies, like artificial intelligence, with ethics and equity. 
  • Drop-in sessions geared at students and postdocs will be held on scheduled days from 2 – 4 p.m. (eastern) from May 31 to June 4 at the SSHRC Lounge.
  • These will be an opportunity to chat with SSHRC programs staff and ask questions about scholarships and awards. Virtual sessions will also be held from June 3-5. Follow SSHRC on social media for updates and to submit your questions.

New, groundbreaking interdisciplinary research projects launched

On March 13, 2025, the Government of Canada announced an investment of more than $142 million for New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) Transformation stream projects. Learn more about the six new Canadian-led, interdisciplinary research projects that are addressing major challenges and have the potential to realize lasting change.

New and renewed Canada Research Chairs

More than $153 million in funding was recently announced to support 179 new and renewed Canada Research Chairs across 38 research institutions. These investments will advance research and critical innovations in fields as diverse as responsible artificial intelligence, multigenerational trauma and resilience in First Nations Peoples, land-ocean biogeochemistry, nanomaterials for regenerative medicine, transmission and knowledge of the Inuit language, RNA-targeted drug discovery, and many more. 

SSHRC sponsors new student award to recognize research in Canadian francophone minority communities

SSHRC is sponsoring a new student award delivered by Acfas aimed at highlighting an important contribution to the vitality of French-language research and its influence across Canada. The inaugural prize will be awarded to a student at the master's or doctoral level in 2026. The competition opens soon, so stay tuned for more details.

Details of the new tri-agency harmonized scholarships and fellowships program are now online. Canada Research Training Awards Suite competitions at master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral levels will open in summer 2025. How multilingualism shapes spoken French in Canada

As multiculturalism shapes Canada’s cultural identity, the country’s linguistic identity follows suit. University of Manitoba linguistics professor Nicole Rosen studies the impact of Indigenous and immigrant languages on the French spoken in Francophone communities across Canada’s Prairies and beyond. She has been uncovering a rich tapestry of linguistic identities and unique languages that have emerged in these regions as a result of these cultural intersections.

Canada’s public health expertise gets a boost from Canada 150-funded researchers

Caroline Colijn, Canada 150 Research Chair (C150) in Mathematics for Infection, Evolution and Public Health at Simon Fraser University, is used to plotting the likelihoods of scenarios. But, after returning to Canada and joining the C150 program, she could not have foreseen how invaluable her work would become just 18 months later, when the first stories of a “novel coronavirus” emerged.

SSHRC administers the C150 program on behalf of Canada’s federal research funding agencies.
