THE NEED FOR FOSTERS IS URGENT . . .

We are currently OUT of kitten fosters and have NO more room in our shelter. Sadly, we will have to turn away helpless kittens without relief. We are desperate and begging for your help.

YOU can be the one to make a difference in their lives at this critical time when we are in URGENT need. Any space you have to offer is better than returning these precious kittens outside.

If you would like to foster, please fill out a foster form on our website at https://forgottencats.org/foster-a-cat. Forgotten Cats will provide a training manual and medical care for all foster cats. You provide the basic necessities: litter box & litter, food (Purina cat or kitten chow), bedding, and love.

Pick up would take place at our shelters in either Willow Grove, PA or Trainer, PA (whichever is closer to you).

We also have plenty of adult cats who need a break from the shelter if you’d prefer an older cat.

We are grateful for any help - together we can make a difference.

The Path to Forgotten Cats for Our

August Spotlighted Volunteer Andrea Nation

Began Before FC was Founded!

by Mary Ann Emely

Twenty-five years ago, before 2003 when Forgotten Cats was founded, our August spotlighted volunteer, Andrea Nation met Susan Silverman, currently the FC Volunteer Manager at the Jenkintown PetSmart Adoption Center. Back then, Andrea was working as a receptionist for Susan’s husband, a doctor, and had occasion to meet Susan at social functions and to become friends. Among other things, they had a love of animals in common.

Andrea says she’s always had pets – dogs, cats, rodents, a snake, fish, a rabbit. Her first kitten experience as an adult was when she saved five bottle babies in her neighborhood more than 20 years ago. Everyone who knew Andrea also knew how much she loved animals, so when a mamma cat didn’t return to her babies in 24 hours, they called her for help.

After checking with a vet to be sure they weren’t dehydrated she began the task of getting those babies ready for forever homes. Their umbilical cords were still attached, eyes closed, so helpless. She bought KMR (Kitten Milk Replacement) and learned how to feed and stimulate them to go potty. She even took them to work in a box to continue their around-the-clock care. They all thrived and found homes including Stripey who lived with Andrea and her family for 22 years. All of her animals over the years have been rescued either directly off the street or through rescue organizations. Andrea says “cats, especially, must have a social network saying "find Andrea - she’ll help you!”

Through the years, Andrea always said that when she retired, she would join her friend, Susan at Forgotten Cats, where she knew Susan was a dedicated volunteer. Andrea retired in 2019 and she did in fact quickly become one of FC’s hardest working volunteers.

She started volunteering at the Jenkintown PetSmart doing a two-hour shift. Andrea said, “Susan’s organization of the cat area is phenomenal, and it was easy to learn the procedures and become fully involved.” She began to take on adoption counseling and processing applications. She says she thought she could leave the tech world behind when she retired, but now she is doing more than she ever had.

Andrea started taking in some kitten fosters in 2020 and has had some fosters most of the time since then. She said, “it is such a joy to watch them explore the world and never know what they’ll do next.”

As her confidence grew, Andrea started to help with the adoption events at the Willow Grove PetSmart. She has been involved in many areas of FC and hopes someday to help at the clinic.

Andrea, who has been married for 42 years to Den, has two adult children – a son, Tim, who is 36 and has a home in Roslyn, and a daughter, Jessie, 41, who lives in Maryland with her husband Greg and with Andrea’s grandchildren Maya and Evan. Andrea also has furry and feathered family members – a dog, 4 cats, and a cockatiel.

Her dog, Troy, went through a difficult medical issue where he had a large fluid-filled cyst removed from his chest, under the front leg "armpit" and it became infected with MRSP. That is an organism that does not respond to most antibiotics. He had to have amikacin injections and sub-q fluids for about 6 months before it cleared up, wearing an E-collar and T-shirts all the time. Long term steroids gave him diabetes and he also became blind. He is a sweet boy in his golden years at 10 years old. Andrea shared these photos of sweet Troy.

Two of Andrea’s cats are foster fails. The most recent and “probably the last” she says, is Special who is 15 months old. Special was born “different” . . . “a CH or wobbly cat kind of thing.” A neurologist they saw said it may be an atrophied part of the brain or it may be a visual disfunction or an unknown neuro issue. Special seems to have a delayed response from his senses to his brain. Andrea says her other animals love him but Special is not a fan of new kitties in the house which makes fostering a little difficult in a small house.

Above, Andrea is pictured with her feline family – left to right, Special, foster Mama Cat, and Flame.

Andrea tells us that they have a mountain cabin in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania where she loves to hike, swim, read take photographs and enjoy the wild animals . . . skunk, bear, porcupine, turkey, deer, chipmunks – she said she loves and respects them all. Chipmunks at her mountain cabin climb up her leg for peanuts. She said it is her happy place.

Forgotten Cats believes that all the animals whose lives Andrea has touched believe that wherever they are when Andrea is there, is a happy place. Andrea, because of the volunteering you do for us, FC is a happier place, too! Thank you!

Misty - a life changed . . .

To the volunteers and Medical Staff at Forgotten Cats-Trainer, in lieu of just saying “thank you” I thought I would share how you made a life changing transformation in a feral cat named Misty.

In May of 2021, Misty started to hang around my neighborhood. I trapped Misty and had taken him to Forgotten Cats to be vetted. Since he was feral, he was then released back to my community. Upon releasing Misty, he continued to visit my house for daily feedings but was sure to remind me with hisses to keep my distance. As winter was approaching, I installed a “cat entry door” in my garage door and one in the catio on my deck, with hope to provide Misty shelter and safety. I was surprised and excited when I saw him use both of those cat doors, but he continued to run and hiss each time I approached.

Fast forward to May 2022, I noticed Misty was eating less than normal and he was shaking his head after eating. This behavior continued for almost a week with each day a little worse than the day before. I called multiple vets but because he was feral, I was quickly turned away. As more time passed, he was barely eating. He was now screaming out in pain when attempting to eat and drooling blood. Thankfully, Forgotten Cats allowed me to bring in Misty for treatment. In my mind and heart, I knew if the root cause could not be determined I would need to consider putting him to rest, as the pain he was enduring was impacting his quality of his life.

Just one look into Misty’s mouth told the story of his severe pain. It appeared as if one of the salivary glands inside his mouth burst. He required weeks of pain management medications and antibiotic injections. I knew I couldn’t provide this sort of medical care in my home. He was a feral cat that I couldn’t even touch!

Luckily, Misty was allowed to stay at Forgotten Cats, and he received the necessary care to restore his health, and likely received the utmost supportive care and human intervention that he had received in his entire life. This human care is what made the most amazing life changing event for Misty…

Approximately one week after releasing Misty back to my yard, my cats were eating their breakfast in the living room, and when I returned to them, I was astonished to see Misty sitting and eating with the other cats. He had worked up the courage and had established enough trust to enter the house, through the Catio entry door, and he had joined the family. Misty now comes and goes as he pleases. He is making progress interacting with me; however, he still hisses when I get within his safety zone. I am not sure if he will ever let me touch him, but his progress is remarkable, and I am sure would that never happened without his visit to Forgotten Cats. Forgotten Cats saved and changed Misty’s life for the better. For that, I am grateful.

Featured Cats - Sweden & Poppy!

Sweden - Sweden is very special girl for many reasons. She is a female Tuxedo. Most Tuxedos are male. This makes her intelligence a notch higher than other cats. She is a fast learner and most likely will want to play games with you such as fetch.

She is very vocal so you can trust she will let you know whatever is going on, her preferences and a basic "hello". Once greeted she will place her head in your hand for some cheekbone scratchies. She is always very verbally insistent about the continuation of affection even after you have stopped. Naturally, you will want to devote more attention to her. She is the kind of girl who will promise her love and loyalty to you for life. FCID# 03/31/2022-111

Sweden is in our Willow Grove, PA clinic/shelter and would love to be in a home environment. Please consider fostering or adopting.

Poppy is playing in our Brookhaven PetSmart adoption center.  Please ask to meet and hold her!

Poppy and her friends would love to be in a home environment. Please submit our no-obligation adoption application.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AT THE TRAINER CLINIC/SHELTER!

ClinicVolPicUpdated.png

This is an opportunity to help cats whose ONLY medical treatment during

their lifetime may be when they go to our clinic. Volunteering at the Trainer clinic is an important and serious under-taking and we are looking for the few ready to make the commitment.

Clinic Volunteers need to commit to one specific day a week at the clinic. The reason for this is that we are dealing with the lives of the cats, and we need to make sure that our volunteers know the clinic procedures, and this can only be done by volunteering on at least a once-a-week basis.

We will train. No medical background required.

IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW IS INTERESTED IN THIS POSITION, PLEASE CONTACT US AT: info@forgottencats.org - please include your phone number.

Volunteer at our Trainer Shelter (located in Delaware County, near Claymont, DE) to care for our cats while they anxiously await adoption or release back to their colony.

Our shelter volunteers are responsible for basic feed and clean of the cats in our care. Shelter volunteers are also encouraged to assist with laundry, dishes, and cage/carrier sanitization whenever possible.

Of course, you can squeeze in some cuddle and play time with our adoptable kitties! Time commitment is one day per week for 2-3 hours, preferably before 1pm.

IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW IS INTERESTED IN THIS POSITION, PLEASE CONTACT US AT: info@forgottencats.org - please include your phone number - or complete a volunteer application: https://forgottencats.org/services/volunteer/
