Friends and Supporters,

We are excited to share that PSG is featured in Richmond Magazine’s March issue! The article by Harry Kollatz, Jr wrestles with how our city and region could grow sustainably. We shared our vision of a great city, expanded transit, sustainable suburban growth in the inner suburbs and along transformed arterial road corridors with rapid transit, and significant rural land conservation – all with a goal of avoiding the mistakes of Northern Virginia sprawl and traffic.

Citing the potential for transforming commercial corridors like Broad and Hull streets Mechanicsville and Midlothian Turnpikes, PSG Coordinator Amy Guzulaitis noted:

“[These corridors] have the space to support dedicated bus lanes, safer pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure, commercial and retail redevelopment, mixed residential…”

Commercial strip corridors offer thousands of acres of land currently paved in parking lots and one story buildings where we can create walkable communities and more housing, fix existing stormwater runoff problems, and reduce the pressure to gobble up farms and forests. The article contrasts urban and suburban infill growth opportunities with the disappointing decision by Henrico County to approve the “Arcadia” development on 250 acres of farmland in Varina.

The article also features the Route 5 Corridor Coalition and its more sustainable vision for Varina, the new Henrico Conservation Action Network, the Capital Region Land Conservancy and their contributions to city parkland and battlefield preservation, and Richmond’s Office of Sustainability goals for Richmond to be a truly “green city.” Working for a more sustainable region has to be a team sport!

We hope this article will encourage our elected officials to support more sustainable and inclusive patterns of growth – with more homes in our city and older suburbs, more transit, safer streets for walking and biking, and preserved farms and forests.

We also hope the article inspires you to join and support PSG (and our partners!) and to jump into local planning.
