As we said in our alert at the time ”While we support EV’s, this is still a parking lot (albeit with some green space) in a city seeking to become less car dependent.” This month, Dominion revealed that they are not moving forward with the energy park and would market the parcel for sale for development!
This opens up the space to a more appropriate use for the area. In the city’s Richmond 300 plan this lot is identified for Downtown Mixed-Use and encourages infill development that helps to create an active street. It includes improving non-car connectivity by encouraging urban design that promotes pedestrian and bicycle use and is transit-oriented.
The City now has the opportunity to build something that will increase the vibrancy of the area (such as office with ground floor retail or residential space with affordable housing) and add more tax revenue for the City.
Thank you to those who joined PSG in encouraging Dominion to shift to a better approach for our urban downtown. If you appreciate our role in advocating for smart growth, good urban design, transit and safer streets for walking and biking, please consider donating to support our team!
