A Journey of Triumph
Maria Vargas found it challenging to communicate and interact with people socially as a result of her disability, but it didn’t stop her from wanting to try and overcome her barriers. Maria visited the Lehigh Community Resource Center (CRC) and after her assessment meeting, she agreed to be a volunteer for the CRC as part of her action plan toward interacting better with people.
| | |
In the beginning, it was not easy but little by little, she improved. Maria became more interactive and friendly. She projected herself more professionally and with a positive confidence that inspired trust and respect with people around her. Maria also started to enjoy participating in different events in the community such as the United Way campaign, Second Chance Job Fairs and more.
Because of her improvement, Maria was paired with a job coach that continued to work on her soft skills as well as other basic customer service skills that would improve her chances of getting a job.
Maria’s hard work and determination led her to part-time employment at Target in the deli department. Without the opportunity to improve her skills as a volunteer at Goodwill CRC, Maria may not have ever felt confident enough to apply for a job. Now, not only does Maria have a paying job, but she continues to work as a volunteer at the Goodwill Lehigh CRC giving back her time and helping others to find their way.

The 18th Annual Festival of Trees
Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida and the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center (SBDAC) hosted the 18th Annual Festival of Trees, December 5, 2024 through December 8, 2024. This annual fundraiser benefits both community nonprofits, and has become a holiday tradition in Southwest Florida for thousands of families. This year's event filled the atrium at the Art Center with hundreds of gleeful hopeful winners.
| | | |
Mayor's Choice
Every year we award one tree designer with the "Mayor's Choice" ribbon. Since Mayor Kevin Anderson was out of town, Mayor Pro Tem, Fred Burson (Ward 5 - Councilmember) came out to select his favorite. The lucky winner was the Sidney & Berne Davis Center's "Events for All Seasons" tree, offering free tickets to the events at the art center for a year.
| | |
...and the winner is - Best In Show
Every year, Lee County Supervisor of Elections comes out to the Festival of Trees and sets up their voting machines so the public can vote for their favorite trees, in several categories.
Ribbons are awarded to the trees selected, and those ribbons are given to the designers/sponsors of those trees.
First time tree sponsor, MHK Architecture, took the ribbon for "Best All Around" this year. Truly a fan favorite.
| | | |
Best of Florida &
Family Favorite
| |
Fort Myers Technical College designed a Grinch tree that took two ribbons:
"Best of Florida" awarded by Spencer Roach, and voted by the public, the "Family Favorite."
| | |
Trinity Commercial Group was voted "Most Creative" for their lighthouse "Wine & Shine" tree.
There are about 80 bottles of wine on this tree, won by a long-time Festival of Trees and SBDAC volunteer.
| | |
The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center won a second ribbon this year for Most Traditional with their Wedding Event Tree.
This beautiful classic tree was designed by the Art Center's own Dharma Lefevre.
