The word kakistocracy consists of two Greek elements: kakistos, the superlative of kakos, 'bad', meaning 'the worst', and kratos, which means 'power' or 'rule' and is the same ending as in aristocracy and democracy. Etymologists have traced kakos back even further to a Proto-Indo-European root, kaka-, which was associated with defecation, the same root that in turn gave rise to the English words poppycock and cacophony.
