Chief Economists Outlook Warns of Dire Human Consequences from the Fragmentation of the Global Economy
Davos-Klosters, Switzerland 23 May 2022 – The World Economic Forum’s Community of Chief Economists expects lower economic activity, higher inflation, lower real wages and greater food insecurity globally in 2022, pointing to the devastating human consequences of the fragmentation of the global economy.
Reversing previous expectations for recovery, the majority of respondents to the latest survey expect only a moderate economic outlook in the United States, China, Latin America, South Asia and Pacific, East Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East and North Africa in 2022. In Europe, the majority expect the economic outlook to be weak.

Hang up on imposter scams
When people encounter scams or bad business practices, they report them to the FTC. And what we’ve learned is interesting. Young adults report losing money to scammers more often than older people do, but when people age 70+ had a loss, the reported median loss was much higher.

FDA's “All-in” Approach to Enterprise Transformation
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's responsibilities to protect the public health are broad, complex, and necessary because the products we regulate are in every home and used every day across the U.S. As we witnessed during the pandemic, the FDA plays a critical role in enabling access to safe and effective medical products, such as vaccines, therapeutics, and accurate diagnostic testing. The agency also monitors and supports the supply chains for critical components of these products, while continuing to ensure the safety of our food supply, all in an increasingly complex and interconnected environment.

BBB Scam Alert: What to do if your Facebook friend claims you’re owed workers’ comp
A scammer impersonates one of your Facebook friends and sends you a message. They allegedly saw your name on a list of people who are owed workers’ compensation. Lucky you! They also provide the phone number of a person who can help you collect the money.
You think the information came from a trusted friend, so you make the call. The “agent” sounds professional—at first. They either confirm that you are owed money or asks you to pay a small fee so they can check. They may claim to have an official sounding title, such as “Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board member” or a “Federal Treasury Reserve official.”

The markets have had the worst week since 2001; the Dow lost -934.76 points, the S&P 500
122.53 and Nasdaq -450.38, and Wall Street was slightly up today.
| |
The U.S. & European stock markets closed the week with mixed results, with indices slightly up, avoiding entering bear territory as investors' concerns over a recession and rising interest rates are provoking a flight to safety rotation.
Delaying R&D Amortization Generates Short-Term Revenue but No Long-Term Economic Benefit
Starting this year, firms must amortize their research and development (R&D) expenses over five years rather than immediately deduct them from taxable income, a policy change designed to raise federal tax revenue in the short term.
As policymakers consider the future of the R&D tax change, one option on the table is to delay the amortization of R&D expenses for four years until 2026, as proposed in the House Build Back Better Act last year. Within the 10-year budget window, a four-year delay would cost about $223 billion less than canceling amortization outright, but it would not increase long-run economic growth.
