THE THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

PRINCE OF PEACE CHURCH

Is called to know, love, and serve Jesus as Savior and Lord,

to share his healing and transformation with all people.

8:00 AM and 10:00 AM Services

(Blessing of the Animals at the 10:00 AM service

will be livestreamed)

STEWARDSHIP OF CREATION

Creation is a Gift from God. God made it and said, “It is Good.” That should be reason enough for us to work toward the healing of this planet.

With Earth Day on April 22, we are dedicating this Sunday to Stewardship of Creation. The Message will be given by the Prince’s Players sharing about the life of John Muir. We will also hand out a brochure on the Fifteen Things YOU Can Do to Care for Creation.

There are four motivations for all Christians to take action NOW:

  1. Stewardship / responsibility for Nature.
  2. Social justice for the “least of these” who are most affected by environmental degradation.
  3. The inter-connection of our behaviors to cultures and environments.
  4. Spiritual affirmation that all of creation is a gift from God.

Global climate change is fundamentally altering God’s Creation. Bird and fish migration patterns are changing, permafrost is melting, and coastal wetlands are disappearing because of sea level rise. It is estimated that 25% of plant and animal species are at risk of extinction. Overall, global climate change is predicted to bring increases in flooding, severe storm events, and drought.

People need to remember that individuals can make a difference.

God made it and said, “It Is Good” – and then He told us to Take Care of It. It’s that simple – not Easy – but the commandment is there. It is our responsibility to care for God’s Creation. People of faith must speak out on this important issue. We must lead the way. We need to educate. We need to set a good example. We need to talk about it and pray about it. We need to go outside and play – remembering and appreciating God’s Creation.

THE ALTAR GUILD NEEDS YOU!

The Altar Guild is seeking new members to join this vital "behind-the-scenes" ministry. This dedicated group prepares the sanctuary for worship with care, reverence, and attention to detail.

 About the Altar Guild

  • Purpose: To "set the stage" for worship services, including Sundays, weddings, baptisms, and funerals, while maintaining the beauty and order of the sanctuary.
  • Duties: Preparing and clearing the altar for services, caring for sacred vessels, linens, vestments, polishing silver; and changing hangings and colors according to the liturgical season.
  • Commitment: Members serve in teams on a rotating schedule, often one week per month, including Saturday morning preparation, Sunday services, and holy days. A monthly meeting is also held to discuss and coordinate upcoming needs.
  • Training: No prior experience is necessary. Training is provided, and new members are supported by experienced guild members.

This ministry is open to both men and women who feel called to serve God in a quiet and meaningful way. If you enjoy preparing for celebrations and working behind-the-scenes, or would like to learn more about the traditions of the Episcopal Church, we warmly invite you to consider joining us.

An Iona Blessing

May God, who is present

in sunrise and nightfall,

and in the crossing of the sea,

guide your feet as you go.

May God,

and when you stand,

encompass you with love

and lead you by the hand.

May God, who knows your path

and the places where you rest,

be with you in your waiting,

be your good news for sharing,

and lead you in the way

that is everlasting.

 Amen.

VACCINATIONS AND ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE

Alzheimer’s is an incurable disease which causes a progressive loss of memory, cognitive function, and behavioral changes. The #1 risk factor for Alzheimer’s is being aged 65 or older. There are several experimental vaccines aimed at preventing the brain cell death caused by Alzheimer’s. None of them are currently approved for public use. However, recently published research demonstrates that two easily available vaccines provide a protective effect against developing Alzheimer’s in individuals 65 or older.

Influenza Vaccine:

  • Receiving an annual standard-dose flu shot has been associated with a 40% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s.
  • Recent findings from the University of Texas-Houston, indicate that receiving the high-dose flu shot recommended for people 65 or older reduces the risk of developing Alzheimer’s by as much as 55% compared to standard-dose vaccines.
  • The effect is stronger in women.

Shingles (Herpe Zoster) Vaccine:

  • Stanford University recently published a study showing that the current two-dose vaccine provides a 20% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s. Once again, the effect is stronger in women.
  • Additionally, the study indicated that people who received the vaccine were less likely to develop mild cognitive impairment. This is a condition which often precedes an Alzheimer’s dementia diagnosis.
  • Finally, people already diagnosed with dementia who received the two-dose shingles vaccine, were less likely to die from the disease in the next 9 years. The researchers suggested that the vaccine could slow the progress of the disease.

Both the flu and shingles vaccines provide immediate results by preventing and/or reducing the severity of their respective diseases. Now the case for staying up to date with them is even stronger – they can protect your brain.

I Corinthians 6:19-20: 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.
