Save the Date: Texas Women and Girls in STEM Summit

Save the date! The Texas Women & Girls in STEM Summit will be hosted virtually on Thursday, December 8th from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. with in-person regional breakouts across Texas beginning at 4 or 5 p.m.

Join the Texas Girls Collaborative Project (TxGCP), led by WiSTEM, for our 6th Annual Texas Women and Girls in STEM Summit designed to share best practices, connect organizations and individuals, and showcase outstanding efforts to increase the number of girls in STEM and support the retention of women in STEM careers. STEM professionals and all who are engaged in education, outreach, recruitment, and/or retention of women and girls in STEM are invited to join in.

TxGCP is a statewide network of non-profits, K-12 schools, higher education institutions, companies, organizations, and individuals committed to motivating and supporting women and girls to pursue and thrive in careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Led by WiSTEM at UT Austin, TxGCP provides forums, curriculum, effective practices, and resources to foster collaborations, build the capacity of participating organizations, and create a state-wide network of informed, connected, and inspired STEM educators and advocates. TxGCP is a state collaborative of the National Girls Collaborative Project.

Partner with a STEM Learning Ecosystem Near You!

STEM Ecosystems Foster Community Engagement for a Strong Future – Partner with a STEM Learning Ecosystem Near You!

By Stephanie García, Ph.D. IDRA Newsletter

A learning ecosystem harnesses unique collaborations in symbiosis to deliver equitable STEM learning for all children. A STEM Learning Ecosystem encompasses schools; community settings, such as after-school and summer programs, science centers and museums; and informal experiences at home and in a variety of environments that together constitute a rich array of learning opportunities for young people. There are designated STEM Learning Ecosystems across the world, with a large presence here in the United States. Texas has three STEM Learning Ecosystem designations.

Educator Resources: All Educators

“Got Veggies?” Garden Education Resource

The Central Texas Food Bank’s Garden Manager, Greg Mast, has developed a garden educational resource. This collection has 6 short videos (roughly 10 minutes each) that cover gardening basics, healthy recipe demos, and more. Additionally, there is an activity booklet to go along with the curriculum. This resource is free, open to the public, and can be shared.

Access and Engagement III

Access and Engagement III adds to these earlier findings and continues the story as schools gradually returned to in-person teaching. In addition to survey data from educators, the current study features qualitative findings, obtained through focus groups and interviews, sharing personal accounts of challenges, successes, and reflections on the potential long-term impacts of the pandemic.

Annual Girls Lead STEM Month

Throughout October, #GirlsLeadSTEM will lead a social media campaign to amplify the diverse voices of girls involved in STEM projects and fields from across the U.S. We will shine a light on the diversity of organizations, approaches and girls paving the way for a sustained pathway in STEM.

SWE Invent it Build it

Thursday, October 20th- Saturday, October 22nd

Parents and educators play a crucial role in girls’ success in pursuing an engineering career. At this event, SWE highlights this “village” of support by providing resources to better advocate for girls in STEM. Parents, guardians, teachers, counselors, administrators, and leaders are encouraged to participate in the Parent/ Educator Program (PEP), which will run from noon to 3:30 p.m. Participants are asked to stay for the entire program.

Parents and educators will:

  • Explore the Invent it. Build it. EXPO.
  • Learn about engineering careers, scholarships, college admission, and available resources.
  • Network with SWE members and other parents and educators.
  • Complete a hands-on activity and learn best practices for engineering projects with girls.
  • Have lunch with the SWE engineers (lunch provided).

The cost to attend is $5. Financial assistance is available upon request.

 Ciena Teacher Grants

The Ciena Grants are established to support classroom teachers with the implementation of innovative and engaging STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) programs, activities, and technology (software and hardware) to promote learning and digital equality. The Ciena grant program will award deserving teachers in the DC metro area, DoDEA schools, and schools in all 50 states grants up to $3,000. The grants will be applied towards materials and resources to support STEM programs and activities. Schools with high economic need (over 50% of the students qualifying for free or reduced lunch assistance) will be given priority consideration to support digital equality. Innovative distance and virtual learning projects and programs will be considered. Applications accepted on a rolling basis.
