Today's Immigration News
U.S. Citizens Caught in Immigration Dragnet | The New York Times
As part of the president's immigration crackdown, U.S. citizens, many of them Latinos, have been stopped and, in some cases, taken into custody by law enforcement officers because they were suspected to be undocumented immigrants. Many have immediately declared their citizenship but have been routinely ignored, according to the detained individuals, their lawyers, and court documents. In some cases, the individuals have been handcuffed and kept overnight. A review of publicly reported cases and court documents reveals that at least 15 citizens have been detained or questioned about their status since January. No federal log of the exact number is available, and immigration officials are not required to document stops of citizens.
Perspective: Growing Resistance to Mass Deportations | Time
President Donald Trump's mass deportation promises from the campaign trail are now a reality. Many of the tactics used to deport people are dehumanizing and illegal, causing familial, economic, and social repercussions that will linger for decades. Yet communities have refused to stand by idly. From large cities, like Los Angeles, to rural small towns, like O'Neill, Nebraska, communities have united across lines of race, class, immigration status, and political affiliation to resist the cruelty and chaos. Many churches have become organizing and gathering places for volunteers and lawyers aiding immigrants. In some big cities, mariachi bands have serenaded under the hotel rooms of immigration agents who plan to arrest their relatives the following morning.
