SHADOW ROCK RESPONDS TO LOOMING FOOD INSECURITY

We are hearing a great deal of the effects of the federal government shutdown, and creating food insecurity is one of the most faith critical of the effects. We are watching as the Arizona state government responds and courts hammer out their decisions.

Shadow Rock is responding by prioritizing food assistance when we use the Pastor's Charitable Fund.

We are also recommending donations to the Desert Mission Food Bank located on the other side of the mountain in Sunnyslope. Below is a link and a list of preferred needed items.

HonorHealth Desert Mission Food Bank

Food items of greatest need

Desert Mission accepts most non-perishable food donations if the product is unopened, labeled and in its original packaging.

We encourage you to donate heart-healthy foods that are low in sodium and fat, though have the greatest need for the following:

  • Pasta
  • Cereal
  • Canned veggies (low sodium encouraged)
  • Juice (100% juice encouraged)
  • Chicken and tuna in water
  • Canned beans
  • Dry beans
  • Peanut butter
  • Bottled water

Other items of greatest need:

  • Paper products, such as toilet paper and paper towels
  • Hygiene products
  • Baby formula (orange or blue Similac for ages 12 months and younger)

Donation drop-offs

Donations can be dropped off at Desert Mission Food Bank during our hours of operation (see hours and directions).

Please pull into the loading area to the left of the food bank entrance. Ring the doorbell, and our friendly staff or volunteers will assist you.

Another consideration for our response in the near future is a special offering in December. More on this later.

Please note: The food bank is most empowered with financial donations because they can leverage more than we can because of the contacts and networking.

LOOKING FOR RED AND BLUE POLITICAL PARTICIPANTS FOR OUR EXPERIMENTAL PROJECT TO PROMOTE CIVILITY

Common Ground Dialogue Network for Right & Left Politics

The Vision Is:

  1.  To bring people from each side of the American political aisle together for peaceful dialogue of values (and beliefs) in politics.
  2. To reduce negativity and division among people with different viewpoints.
  3. To foster understanding between people of opposing political views.
  4. To provide factual resources for American politics.
  5. To learn non-combative ways to communicate with those who hold opposing opinions.
  6. To open avenues of understanding of how many people arrive at perspectives so different from our own.

Alyce-Anne Meadows is organizing this social experiment. Several tasks and roles are required to make this happen. We want people to be the face and voice of their political perspectives, and we seek individuals who are willing to work behind the scenes for communication, promotion, and hospitality. If you would like to be part of this important and timely work, please get in touch with Alyce-Anne by clicking on her name for the email.

If you have questions about Spiritual Play, please feel free to reach out to Dr. Cindy Hoard.

Today's Immigration News

Video Shows Armed ICE Officers Chasing Teacher Into Chicago Preschool To Arrest Her | The Washington Post

Immigration officers arrested a woman teacher early on Wednesday in Chicago after chasing her into the building of a private preschool and grabbing her as parents and students watched, according to local officials, witnesses, and video footage. Several parents said they saw armed agents chase the woman into the building of Rayito de Sol, a Spanish-language immersion day care and school. The agents dragged the woman outside as she yelled, "Tengo papeles" ("I have papers"). This appears to be one of the first instances where immigration officers entered a school to make an arrest.

Armed Immigration Agents Arrest U.S. Citizen Father, Drive Off With His Toddler | The Guardian

Masked, heavily armed immigration agents arrested a U.S. citizen in the parking lot of a Los Angeles Home Depot, then entered his car and drove off with his one-year-old daughter in the backseat. The agent later called the girl's grandmother to come and pick up her granddaughter. The Department of Homeland Security said the man exited his car with a hammer and threw stones at the agents. He was arrested and charged with assault. The agency did not answer questions regarding why agents drove away with the child rather than wait for a family member to come and pick her up at the parking lot.
