December 2024 Issue

Note From Mayor George

Lakewood Residents,

I hope you all had an enjoyable Thanksgiving weekend. As we officially enter the holiday season–and with it, cold and snowy winter weather–I'd like to share a few reminders.

First, free rock salt is once again available to all residents to help keep sidewalks and driveways free of slippery ice and snow. Remember that as a dense, walkable community, many residents rely on our sidewalks to .get around each day, and removing snow and ice is very important. If you are unable to shovel snow, you may contact LakewoodAlive to inquire about their volunteer snow shoveling program. Thank you to the volunteers who help out during the winter months

Second, the Public Works team will be out plowing our many roads and streets when the snow arrives. Please remember to give the plows space to work, move your vehicles off the street periodically to allow the plows to clear the entire road, and follow all snow ban directions that may be issued.

Lastly, there are many ways to help brighten our fellow Lakewood neighbors' holidays this year - especially those in need of assistance providing food and gifts. If you have the ability, I encourage you to visit Cove Community Center to participate in their annual Giving Tree, donate non-perishable foods to the LCAC Food Drive, and explore the many other charitable options in Lakewood and beyond.

I hope you and your loved ones have a wonderful holiday season and I look forward to seeing you out at Light Up Lakewood!

Rock Salt Distribution Returns for Winter 2024-2025

Salt distribution boxes are back at Kauffman, Madison, Cove, and Lakewood Park as well as the Lakewood Dog Park for Winter 2024-2025. Residents may take home up to 5 gallons of salt for personal use on driveways and sidewalks.

Interested residents must bring their own shovel and bucket and load the salt themselves.

Please remember to secure the cover after use to help prevent the salt from hardening due to rain/moisture!

Leaf Collection Update

City crews have collected leaves several times on each of Lakewood's streets as of this week, with collection to continue through December 20, weather-permitting.

Please remember to pile your leaves on the tree lawn, and not in the street; putting leaves in the street can cause flooding and sewer backups during heavy rains.

Also, please do not put other yard waste in your leaf piles; doing so can jam the collection machines.

To view the updated Leaf Collection Map, click the button below. Clicking on a street shows the number of collections and dates of collection.

If you have any questions, please call (216) 529-6810 between 7:30 AM and 4:00 PM Monday through Friday.

Sustainability Spotlight: Green Gifting

Gift giving is a wonderful thing. This holiday season, consider what you are gifting and the carbon footprint that item may have. Factors that impact the carbon footprint include item materials, distance the item traveled, and packaging associated with that item. The further an item traveled and the more an item is packaged the greater its carbon footprint and the larger amount of waste created. To reduce carbon emissions and waste this giving season, consider green gifting or giving in ways that will not harm the environment.

Green Gifting Ideas

  1. Buy items secondhand to reduce energy and raw material needed to create a new item.
  2. Gift items you make that are focused on use of local and reusable materials such as cookie or hot chocolate mixes in repurposed glass jars or holiday potpourri sachets in cotton bags.
  3. Gift experiences or the gift of your time. Offer to go for a walk, out to a meal, or volunteer for a local organization. We do not always need to give things to show we care.
  4. Give gift cards or cash. Many gift cards are now paper or electronic, cutting down on plastic waste. Make sure to ask about e-gift card options.
  5. Give locally made items. Locally made items are often packaged less and do not travel as far, making them a great option. You are also supporting local businesses helping to improve the local economy.

Division of Aging: Bucket Wish Series

Thanks to a generous grant from the Healthy Lakewood Foundation, Lakewood’s Division of Aging launched the first of three unforgettable Bucket Wish adventures.

Part 1: Cleveland Browns Game

On October 20, 2024, ten lucky seniors were treated to an exciting day at the Cleveland Browns game against the Bengals at Huntington Bank Field. Despite the Browns’ tough 21-14 loss, the day was filled with excitement, highlighted by the return of Nick Chubb and a stellar halftime performance by Foreigner. Perfect weather and great company made for a memorable experience.

Participant Reflections:

  • Trish: "The halftime show with Foreigner was the bomb! I can check that off my bucket list. Big thanks for the game and the spending money!"
  • Johnnie: "I had a wonderful time watching Nick Chubb back in action and even spotted rock stars' planes flying over the stadium. Thank you to everyone who made it happen!"

Part 2: A Dream Spa Day

The second Bucket Wish adventure took three seniors to Mario’s International Spa, where two of them enjoyed their first-ever spa experience. The day included steam baths, soothing massages, a delicious lunch, and pampering mani-pedis, offering a well-deserved moment of relaxation.

Participant Testimonials:

  • Eliza: "Spending the day at Mario’s Spa was a true treat—relaxing in the whirlpool, enjoying a massage, and a perfect mani-pedi. The historic 1800s house made it even more special."
  • Tina: "My first pedicure was made even better by a great conversation with the manicurist. For the next three days, I felt like I was walking on air."
  • Stephanie: "After a soothing massage and delicious lunch, I had a superb pedicure. The salmon was one of the best I’ve had in years."

Stay tuned for Part 3 of our Bucket Wish series—you won’t want to miss it!

H2O: Youth Volunteers Rake in Kindness for Lakewood's Senior Citizens

Now, this is the way to rake in the goodness! Teams of amazing student volunteers from H2O – Help to Others and St. Edward High School gathered to rake leaves for our senior citizens, and the results were heartwarming. A big thank you to the Lakewood Division of Aging for coordinating this wonderful effort.

Over 30 youth volunteers came together to rake the yards of 26 older residents, creating a beautiful community connection. The sweet interactions between the kids and seniors were truly special—both groups shared smiles, stories, and appreciation for one another. What a fantastic example of kindness and teamwork in action!
