January 2025 Issue

Note From Mayor George

Lakewood Residents,

Happy New Year! I hope that you had a wonderful holiday season. As we enter 2025, I am excited for all of the great things that are in store for this year.

First, I want to express my appreciation to all of the parties involved in passing the development agreement for the Downtown Development located on the former site of the Lakewood Hospital: City Council; the Lakewood School District; our team at City Hall including the Planning & Development, Public Works, Law Departments; and each and every resident that attended a public meeting, submitted feedback and comments, and stuck with us throughout the long process. I really believe that this new development will provide a boost to our downtown neighborhood.

2024 was a busy year for City projects, including the completion of the updated Refuse and Recycling Center, ongoing renovations at Winterhurst Ice Arena; continued progress on the Lakewood Interceptor; the Lewis Drive Sewer Improvement Project; the Glenbury, Mars, and Marlowe Avenue Water Main Project; construction of the new Animal Shelter getting underway, and more. I want to thank you for your patience on these projects as we strive to continue to improve all of Lakewood's city services and infrastructure.

Lakewood's parks and tree canopy saw improvements as well, with the Lakewood Park Parking Lot repaving and reconfiguration completed in time for summer, Merl-Bunts Park's tennis/pickleball court refreshed, and the introduction of the very successful Tree Giveaway program.

I am excited to continue the updates in 2025 that will include the completion of the Animal Shelter and Interceptor, the Lakewood Skate Park renovation, more improvements at Winterhurst, and the beginning of more water, sewer, and road repair projects. I ask for your continued patience as we constantly work to maintain and improve the quality of life for residents, visitors, and businesses alike.

On behalf of everyone at City Hall, I wish you all the best in 2025!

Rock Salt Distribution Returns for Winter 2024-2025

Salt distribution boxes are back at Kauffman, Madison, Cove, and Lakewood Park as well as the Lakewood Dog Park for Winter 2024-2025. Residents may take home up to 5 gallons of salt for personal use on driveways and sidewalks.

Interested residents must bring their own shovel and bucket and load the salt themselves.

Please remember to secure the cover after use to help prevent the salt from hardening due to rain/moisture!

Christmas Tree Collection Underway

With the holidays over, it's that sad time of year to pack up the decorations, ornaments, garlands, and the tree. If you use a live tree for Christmas, you can place it on your tree lawn for collection.

Please remember to remove any ornaments, tinsel, lights, and any other decorations from your trees. You do not need to cut or dismantle your live trees for collection.

Sustainability Spotlight: New Year's Resolution for the Planet

Reducing waste, driving less, and using less energy and water are great ideas for New Year’s resolutions. As you make resolutions or goals for 2025, keep your community and the planet in mind. What can you do this year to reduce your environmental impact? If everyone in Lakewood makes small changes, think of the energy and water that could be saved and the waste and emissions reduced.

Below are some simple things you can do to make a big difference in your community, especially when everyone does them.

  1. Turn off the lights when you leave a room. Simply turning off lights saves a lot of electricity and money.
  2. Unplug devices when they are not in use. Voice-activated devices, devices in standby mode like TVs or gaming systems, and phone/device chargers continue to draw electricity even when not in use. This use of electricity is called phantom electricity.
  3. Maintain your heating and cooling systems annually so they will operate better. Energy Star has some great tips for heating and cooling your home efficiently.
  4. Need new appliances? Consider energy_efficient appliances. You are eligible to receive tax credits and rebates for these changes. These rebates are more widely available at the beginning of the year. Learn more from Energy Star.
  5. Made too much food? Freeze your extra food to be eaten later. Learn more from USDA about how to safely store and freeze food.
  6. Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth. Dentists suggest brushing for at least two minutes, which equals 2 gallons of water used when the tap is left on. That means that in one year, if you brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day with the water running, you are wasting (and paying for) 1,460 extra gallons of water.
  7. Try carpooling to work with friends, family, or colleagues. The drive will be more fun and you will reduce your greenhouse gas emissions. An even better commuting option is to not commute at all! Use telework/remote working if possible.
