SFI ATTENDS THE WORLD FORUM ON URBAN FORESTS

SFI attended the 2nd World Forum on Urban Forests in Washington, D.C., from October 15-20. We heard from global urban forestry leaders and were pleased to raise our voices alongside them, participating in this important gathering with many partners who helped contribute to the new SFI standard, and who continue to elevate the importance of green infrastructure and nature-based solutions to human health, disparity, and environmental sustainability.

Kathy Abusow, President and CEO of SFI, moderated the panel, Creating the Policy and Legal Framework to Support the Role of Urban Forests as Public Health Infrastructure, and led the discussion around global policy and legal frameworks to support the role of urban forests as public health infrastructure. Paul Johnson, Senior Director of Urban and Community Forestry at SFI, also presented on the Paving the Way for a Global Urban Forestry Movement panel to discuss the urban forestry movement and the need for opportunity that inspired the new SFI standard.

BIRDS FOR ALL

Kathy Abusow, President and CEO of SFI, participated in a Birds for All Educator Webinar. Kathy presented with Mike Parr, President of the American Bird Conservancy (ABC), and Judy Braus, Executive Director of the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE). The event had over 550 advance registrants from 26 countries!


PLT’s Together for Birds activity collection was featured as an exemplary resource that uses birds to create fun, inclusive, and authentic learning experiences. Available as a free download until December 31, 2023.

BUILDING WITH CERTIFIED MASS TIMBER

SFI-certified Yakama Nation forest products from Oregon and Washington are featured in Portland International Airport’s new roof. Building with SFI-certified wood, including cross-laminated timber (CLT), glue-laminated timber (glulam), and other mass timber products, is a good choice because the wood comes from sustainably managed forests and helps mitigate climate change today and in the future.

FOREST LOVERS CELEBRATE BAT WEEK

When thinking about bats, you might be reminded of the saying “blind as a bat” or remember one of the many movie scenes where a bat is tangled in someone’s hair—or perhaps the fangs associated with blood-sucking vampires. We at SFI would like to clear up a few of these misconceptions and share our appreciation for the ways forests and bats work together.
