Predictability and Hope — The Christian Distinction led by Peter Vanderveen
It would be uncontroversial to say that a principle characteristic of our age is that we have placed our greatest trust in predictability—our increasing capacity to accurately forecast the future. We spend trillions of dollars annually collecting data, analyzing it, and, thereby, determining what lies before us. By seeing the future, we can manage it.
But is this true? And where does it leave us? Many of the predictions for our near future are irremediable and grim. And hopeless. Advent is a season of hope, characterized by many announcements of unpredictable events. How does this articulation of hope reset our lives, changing even what we take to be inevitable?
