Introducing Oldenburg Vineyards
Outstanding Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay from a rising star of Stellenbosch
“To claim South Africa is currently a “bargain” is an understatement… How often do I find myself staring in disbelief at retail prices that are the same as Bordeaux or Burgundy but with the decimal point in a more wallet-friendly position, despite quality equivalent or even superior” Neal Martin
Hello,

The excitement Goedhuis feels for Oldenburg and South Africa reminds us of when we first kicked off with Bordeaux and Burgundy 40 years ago. We’re catching the start of a wave, as this brilliant boutique estate owned by Adrian and Vanessa Vanderspuy draws international attention. Our first offer as a direct partner is for their award-winning white wines.

Perched high-up in the verdant Banghoek Valley, just above Stellenbosch, is Oldenburg Vineyards. Our buyers have just spent an intensive week on the farm, understanding first-hand what makes this estate so special. Their vineyards are arranged like puzzle pieces around Rondekop – a magical hill at the heart of the estate, which provides a unique, 360-degree perspective of the terroir.

In this sublime setting, alive with birdsong, wine alchemy takes place as a very rare set of natural elements converge. Nestled within a soaring mountain amphitheatre, cooling ocean winds funnel though the warm valley creating perfect temperatures both day and night, while below ground hugely diverse, mineral rich, prehistoric soils give wines of staggering elegance and complexity.
“Adrian, Vanessa and their talented team are making some of South Africa’s most exhilarating, terroir-driven wines. They are packed with precision and finesse and we are immensely proud to include them in the Goedhuis portfolio. It is an extremely exciting time to be working directly with an estate with such a bright future. There is no doubt in our minds that Oldenburg is set to become one of the most sought-after estates in South Africa.”  Tom Stopford Sackville, CEO
We are proud to offer:

Oldenburg Vineyards Chenin Blanc 2020 | £18.00/bottle DP inc VAT
  • A crisp, incisive mineral focus underlies this beautiful bone-dry Chenin, distinguishing it from other examples in the region. As winemaker Nic Van Aarde explains, the terroir on the Rondekop offers exciting potential for this variety: “The Chenins we get from Oldenburg are very flinty”.
  • It has a sumptuous, silky body. Juicy peach and quince are laced with a mineral sea salt freshness. This is absolutely delicious.
  • It receives 97 points from Decanter and was part of their ‘Wines of the Year 2021: Top Value Wines’: They call it “very classic and seriously focused”.

Oldenburg Vineyards Chardonnay 2021 | £20.00/bottle DP inc VAT
  • Another award-winning wine, receiving a Decanter Gold Medal.
  • From an alluvial sandstone plot that sits 350m above sea level, this elegant Chardonnay, matured in French oak barrels, shows a streamlined purity and finesse that is hardly believable for the price.
  • Mineral and honeyed with a gorgeous mid-palate density, this is exactingly pure with layers of fresh orchard fruit, lilies and hazelnuts underpinned by a vibrant acidity. We cannot wait to follow this as it evolves in the cellar but it is so irresistible now.
Nic, their impressive young winemaker, is incredibly well respected in the industry, having previously worked at Warwick Estate in Stellenbosch as well as in the Margaret River, Sonoma and even a stint at Ch Angelus. He and his viticulturalist, Christo Crous, have an intimate knowledge of their vineyards and work passionately with nature to “let the terroir talk”. This dynamic duo has captured Oldenburg’s unique microclimate and soil in these pure, precise wines, stamped with mouth-watering acidity and delicious, vivid fruit.

We highly recommend taking a case of each of these outstanding white wines for your Christmas drinking.

Best wishes,

Johnny

Oldenburg Vineyards Chenin Blanc 2020
£108.00 per 6 bottles DP inc VAT
Hand picked and gently whole bunch pressed at a cool temperature, this Chenin sees some serious attention to detail and it shows in the glass. There is an extraordinary purity of fruit here: fresh peach, quince, and red apples come with a twist of mouth-watering salinity. The palate is beautifully focused, shimmering with minerals, flecks of vanilla pod and a white flower freshness. We love its crisp acidity, finessed texture, and amazing through-line of energy. Wow. Drink 2021-2027. Goedhuis & Co

A much-lauded expression of this expressive grape, and one that delivers a very high level of charm and drinkability. Whilst the associated bruised apple notes are present, you will also find pear skin as well as more tropical aromas and flavours including pineapple and banana…even notes of popcorn. Though ripe and characterful, this is a refreshing wine offering a great many food-accompanying possibilities. Or drink it on its own with a friend…or on your own with a few almonds. Oldenburg Vineyards Chardonnay 2021
£120.00 per 6 bottles DP inc VAT
From an alluvial sandstone plot that sits at 350m above sea level, this elegant Chardonnay, matured in French oak barrels, shows wonderful purity. Layers of fresh orchard fruit, grapefruit, chamomile, and lilies are spring-loaded with a vibrant acidity. The touch of French oak is perfectly integrated, offering a rounded texture and delicious hazelnut complexity. The finish is pristine, long and mineral. Drink 2022-2030. Goedhuis & Co

Slightly leaner than the 2020, though even more precise, fresh and poised. Nic loves making Chardonnay, and it shows. As well as a weave of grapefruit zest, quince and apricot, attractively complemented by hints of vanilla and oak spice, there’s a balancing acidic freshness tensioning the whole experience. This is clearly a wine for enjoying right now, but possesses the concentration of flavour to reward you following a few years slumber in your cellar. Demetri Walters MW

Grown at 350m altitude, this bursts with notions of ripest, juiciest fruit on the nose, overlaid with a note of summer blossom and a touch of hazelnut. The palate is totally fluid, full of juiciness and a seductive note of tangerine fullness. Taut texture provides a wonderful backdrop, all is outlined by freshness and subtle oak plays a supportive role. 93 points. Anne Krebiehl MW

Textured and finely spiced with lovely citrus fruit, as well as some pear and spice. This is fine-grained and mealy, and has a nice weight in the mouth. 93 points. Jamie Goode
