#47James Suckling's Top 100 Wines of 2022
Petrolo "Boggina B" 2020 Trebbiano

98 Points & James Suckling #47 Top 100 of 2022
To all Artisans,

Petrolo is the definition of a cult winery, with an owner and a story that have helped create its legendary status. Petrolo is one of Tuscany's best estates but it is also the most UNDER-VALUED. Proprietor Luca Sanjust just took a chance when he purchased this property located pretty much out in the middle of the Tuscan nowhere, way east of Chianti Classico - though virtually unknown even in the wine world, the Valdarno di Sopra denomination dates back to the days of the Medici family during the Renaissance, and the area has always been renowned for the winemaking potential of the tiny area of Tuscany near Chianti in which it is located. Without the wine being one of those 'technical' appellations, it would have to stand on its own merits to get people to 'bite' but would also have to be priced below more 'official' rivals. In the last fifteen years, Petrolo has established itself as one of Tuscany’s, and Italy’s, great wineries and is renowned above all for producing wines with a distinct regional identity.

Boggina B offers a little bit of Burgundy with a Tuscan twist. The wine is made with 100% Trebbiano Toscano. The clone of Valdarno has been known for its quality since the 1300s, when it was regularly sent to the popes in Rome and the courts of Florence. Petrolo has been using Trebbiano grapes for its sweet vin santo for decades, but owner Luca Sanjust decided that the time had come for a tribute to the great whites of Valdarno’s past. The wine is made under the guidance of one of Burgundy’s greats, Mounir Saouma of Lucien Le Moine.

Bòggina is the oldest vineyard on the Petrolo estate. Planted in 1952 by the grandfather of proprietor Luca Sanjust, it spans 13 acres. Bòggina B is produced from Trebbiano planted in the 1970s at Petrolo in the Poggio vineyard and recently replanted below the Bòggina vineyard using the same original clones.

In addition to the stellar reviews below, Antonio Galloni called the previous vintage "ethereal" - he hasn't had a chance to review this vintage yet as it's not yet in the US! You'll have to wait until January to receive it, but given we have been allocated only a VERY limited quantity of this wine, and we expect our limited allocation to disappear rapidly, we encourage you to place your order soon to avoid disappointment!

2020 Petrolo "Boggiana B" Trebbiano
Tuscany, Italy

98 Points, #47 Top 100 of '22 - James Suckling:
"Lots of lemon curd and wax with mustard-flower undertones. Turns to Brazilian lime. Hints of fresh bay leaf, too. Full-bodied, tangy and beautiful. Really long and delicious. Peanuts and white sesame seeds. Superb. Unique and very Tuscan. From organically grown grapes." (Jun 2022)

98 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"A pure expression of Trebbiano, the Petrolo 2020 Bòggina B is a creamy, full-bodied white with generous aromas of honey, crushed nuts, yellow rose and flinty stone. There is an especially abundant and sunny quality to the 2020 vintage. Organic fruit comes from a two-hectare site with rocky Galestro soils. There is some debate in Tuscany today on what could one day become the great, age-worthy white grape of the region. Many vintners have their money on Trebbiano." - Monica Larner (Jun 2022)

Decanter Magazine:
"Bright and lively on the palate, such beautifully expressed raspberry and red cherry fruit flavours alongside high-shining acidity that is so clean and precise. A supremely joyful expression with hints of caramelised strawberries and fresh mint. So sharp but so well defined with a clarity to the palate that is gorgeous. Really delivers a sophisticated, charming, characterful wine that is balanced, easy to enjoy with plenty of life. A more structured and perhaps harder to understand wine than Testamatta this year, but both have their own lovely personalities. This is so complete and abundant, muscular but controlled and full of complexity and detail - there's weight and density without heaviness. A sensational wine. Ageing 12 months in 500l French oak barrels." - GH (Jul 2022)
