South Shore Public Relations Named Skyline Award Finalist

PNW Earns A+ Rating for Science of Reading Alignment
Purdue University Northwest (PNW) earned an A+ rating from the National Council on Teacher Quality for its alignment with the science of reading. NCTQ’s 2026 report assessed more than 700 elementary teacher preparation programs. The recognition highlights PNW’s commitment to research-based literacy instruction and preparing future educators for student success. PNW previously earned an A rating in 2023. Wolfie’s Night Out Trick-or-Treat at Ames Field
Michigan City Area Schools and Michigan City Athletics invite local businesses and organizations to join Wolfie’s Night Out Trick-or-Treat on Wednesday, October 28, from 6:30–8 p.m. at Ames Field. Sponsors will host themed treat stations, providing a tent, table, decorations, and 2,500 individually wrapped pieces of candy. Space is limited. Interested community partners should complete the Interest Sign-Up Form by September 25 to reserve a spot.

Save the Dunes and Indiana Dunes National Park seek qualified consultants to develop and evaluate a pilot real-time parking availability system. Proposals are due 5 p.m. CT, Tuesday, October 13, 2026. The project is expected to begin January 4, 2027.

Michigan City Teacher Named Top 10 Finalist for 2027 Indiana Teacher of the Year
Michigan City Area Schools Lake Hills Elementary third-grade teacher Cindy LoGreco has been named a Top 10 finalist for the 2027 Indiana Teacher of the Year. A member of MCAS since 1995, LoGreco has dedicated her career to helping students grow and succeed. She calls the recognition “OUR award,” crediting her students, colleagues, mentors, families, and the MCAS community for shaping her career and supporting her commitment to education.

Dunebrook Inc. Names Executive Director
Dunebrook Inc. has named Kimberly Smith as its new executive director. A Northwest Indiana native, Smith brings 30 years of nonprofit experience and will lead the organization’s family resource efforts. She previously served as vice president of community impact at United Way of Northwest Indiana and as executive director of the Early Learning Partnership of Northwest Indiana, where she helped bring the Parents as Teachers model to the Region. Smith holds degrees from Purdue University Calumet and Indiana University Northwest.

Michigan City Neighborhood Leadership Academy Accepting Applications
The Michigan City Neighborhood Leadership Academy is accepting applications for its fall session, designed to help residents become effective neighborhood leaders. Open to Michigan City residents age 18 and older, the free eight-session program covers city government, resources, leadership skills and Asset-Based Community Development. Sessions begin October 1, with applications accepted through September 24. Participants must attend two mandatory Saturday Cornerstone classes and at least six of eight sessions to graduate. MCJROTC SUPPORTS COMMUNITY DURING THE SUMMER
Michigan City High School’s Marine Corps Junior ROTC cadets stayed active this summer, supporting their community through service and patriotic events. Cadets provided Color Guards for the Michigan City Patriotic Parade, Independence Day ceremony, National Businesswomen’s Conference and MCAS Kick-Off Meeting. They also cleaned cemeteries, helped at the Michigan City Food Pantry, assisted incoming freshmen and supported the MCAS Back to School Rally. Their dedication demonstrates that serving their country and community is a year-round commitment.

New Traveling Exhibit at La Porte County Historical Society Museum
The La Porte County Historical Society Museum is hosting the Indiana Historical Society’s traveling exhibit, “Faces of the Civil War.” The exhibit shares the stories of Hoosiers whose lives were touched—and sometimes lost—to the Civil War. Rather than focusing on statistics and battles, it highlights how everyday Hoosiers experienced and coped with the challenges of wartime. The exhibit will be on display through October 2. Stop by and explore this fascinating piece of Indiana history!
