MCHS MCJROTC Honors America’s 250th Birthday

The Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) marked America’s 250th birthday by serving the community throughout the Independence Day holiday.

Cadets presented the Colors during the Michigan City Patriotic Parade and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Independence Day ceremony. They also prepared the DAR cemetery and provided parking support despite the extreme heat.

“Our cadets take the patriotic lessons they learn in the classroom and apply them in our community,” said Senior Marine Instructor Major Tom McGrath.

The cadets also continue supporting the Michigan City Food Pantry and training for the Raider Team. This summer, they will present the Colors at the National Drifters Convention and assist with Greenwood Cemetery cleanup and the Michigan City Area Schools Back-to-School Rally.

Rotary Club Fundraiser Supports Growing MCHS Marching Band

On June 25, community members gathered at Gill Field for the Rotary Club of Michigan City's Quarters for Change fundraiser, demonstrating how small donations can make a big impact. Members of the Michigan City High School Marching Band and its directors joined volunteers in laying a quarter mile of quarters around the track while visiting with supporters throughout the afternoon.

Thanks to the generosity of the Michigan City community, more than $1,600 was raised, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Michigan City High School Marching Band. Now serving more than 73 student musicians, the marching band continues to grow each year. Support from events like Quarters for Change helps provide the students with uniforms, equipment, and the resources they need to perform.

Michigan City Area Schools is grateful to the Rotary Club of Michigan City, event sponsors, volunteers, and everyone who contributed to the fundraiser’s success. Your continued support helps strengthen opportunities for our students.

Salvation Army Welcomes Google Leaders to Annual Civic Luncheon

The Salvation Army serving La Porte County will host its annual Light the Path Civic Luncheon on Friday, Aug. 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Blue Chip Casino. The event will bring together business, civic, and nonprofit leaders to discuss corporate values, community impact, and partnerships that strengthen local communities.

Featured speakers are Broderick Green, Public Affairs Manager for Google, and Tiffany McCree, Community & Workforce Development Manager for Google. The conversation will be moderated by Katie Eaton, Public Affairs Manager for NIPSCO and a member of The Salvation Army of Michigan City's Advisory Board. The luncheon is sponsored by NIPSCO with support from the NiSource Charitable Foundation.

Proceeds will support The Salvation Army's case management programs, which help La Porte County residents overcome barriers to stability through personalized support and connections to essential resources. The event also includes a buffet lunch and an envelope fundraiser featuring prizes donated by local businesses. Individual tickets are $50, and table sponsorships are available.

Bill Gertner Joins Wintrust as Senior Vice President, Market Executive for LaPorte County
