The Franklin honored as Project of the Year
The Franklin at 11th Street Station has been named Large Population Project of the Year by the Mid-America Economic Development Council, recognizing its significant impact and collaborative public-private partnership. The $101 million mixed-use development by Flaherty & Collins includes 220 apartments and is located adjacent to the South Shore Train Station in Michigan City’s Transit-Oriented Development District. The project brings together housing, transportation and economic development while supporting continued downtown investment, revitalization and growth locally.

Student Voice Leads to New Uniforms for MCAS Elementary Athletics
More than 580 Michigan City Area Schools elementary student-athletes now have new uniforms after students shared their desire for updated team apparel. Support from eight community sponsors and a $5,000 Unity Foundation grant provided new uniform tops and matching shorts for all eight elementary schools. The initiative reflects MCAS’s commitment to student voice through its Strategic Plan, giving students a stronger sense of pride while representing their schools through soccer, volleyball and basketball.

Horizon Cares Day Returns September 22
Horizon Bank will celebrate its fourth annual Horizon Cares Day on September 22, 2026, bringing together nearly 800 Advisors from Indiana and Michigan to volunteer with more than 80 nonprofit organizations. All Horizon Bank branches will be closed as employees dedicate the day to service. The initiative reflects Horizon’s commitment to strengthening communities through hands-on involvement, supporting local nonprofits and the people they serve.

NIPSCO, Unity Foundation Partner to Provide $400,000 in La Porte County Disaster Relief
Unity Foundation of La Porte County received a $400,000 contribution from Northern Indiana Public Service Company LLC (NIPSCO), with support from the NiSource Charitable Foundation, for disaster relief and long-term recovery following the Aug. 11 severe storms and extended power outages.
Funding will support 13 local organizations and townships providing food, household assistance, property recovery and other services: Catholic Charities, Center Township, Citizens Concerned for the Homeless, Coolspring Township, Food Bank of Northern Indiana, Meals on Wheels, New Durham Township, Operation Feed La Porte County, Pax Center, The Salvation Army, Threads of Hope/New Carlisle Community Food Pantry, Union Township and United Way of La Porte County.

Salvation Army Expands Food Pantry Access for Storm Recovery
The Salvation Army serving La Porte County is expanding food pantry services to help households recover from last month’s severe storms, power outages and unexpected expenses. Through October 31, 2026, households using the Michigan City or La Porte food pantries may receive one additional pantry visit each month. The expansion is supported by NIPSCO, with support from the NiSource Charitable Foundation and administered through the Unity Foundation of La Porte County.

MCHS Honors America on 9/11
Michigan City High School honored America and remembered the nearly 3,000 people killed on September 11, 2001, during a ceremony before the Wolves’ first home football game. Veterans were recognized during the Armed Forces Medley, followed by a moment of silence and Echo Taps. The ceremony concluded with the National Anthem as MCJROTC cadets and flag football players held a 60-by-20-foot American flag. MCHS will host its annual Veterans Day ceremony Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. in the gym, open to the public.

MCHS MCJROTC Competes in Raider Meet in Indianapolis
Michigan City High School’s Marine Corps JROTC competed in a Raider meet at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis on Sept. 12. Many cadets also participated in MCHS’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony the previous evening before reporting to school at 3:30 a.m. for the competition. Despite the short night, the Wolves competed against several larger schools in events including a 5K Run, Raider Fitness Course, Cross Country Rescue, Fitness Gauntlet, Sandbag Relay and One Rope Bridge. MCHS will host its own Raider Meet Sept. 19 at 9 a.m., free and open to the public.

Northwest Indiana Families Value Purdue University Northwest
Purdue University Northwest (PNW) welcomed 1,653 newly admitted undergraduate students and recorded a record 70.8% retention rate for returning second-year students for 2026-27. Nearly 80% of PNW’s undergraduate and graduate students are Indiana residents, with record numbers of incoming students from several Northwest Indiana communities. PNW reported 6,103 total students this fall, while more than 3,100 local high school students earn college credit through PNW partnerships. The university also opened Calumet Hall, bringing on-campus housing capacity to more than 870 students.

Rotary Club to Host Trivia Night to Benefit a Local
Non-Profit
Michigan City’s Rotary Club will host “Trivia for Your Cause” on October 29 at the FOP Lodge, 416 W. U.S. Highway 20. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; trivia with Mark Kline begins at 6:30. Teams of up to eight can enter for $100. Seventy-five percent of proceeds will go to a local nonprofit selected by the winning team. Space is limited to 18 teams, and sponsorships include team entry and recognition.

The platform has now reached a major milestone after screening more than 500,000 home service contractors nationwide.
This milestone means broader coverage for homeowners, more opportunities to connect with trusted local professionals, and a growing customer-acquisition channel for contractors seeking relevant job requests.
