"Financial Advice from God, Part 1:
God's Investment Strategy"

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY

This Sunday, we begin our Season of Commitment with a new sermon series, “Financial Advice from God.” In Part 1, we focus on Jesus’ sermon on the Mount.  He is counseling his disciples about the danger of pursuing money and earthly treasure.

[Matthew 6:19-24].

What does that mean for you and me as we begin this Season of Commitment? How might we be more faithful in investing our earthly treasure in line with God’s investment strategy?

Come on Sunday and find out!

Sermons in this series:

Financial Advice from God

October 25            Part 1: “God’s Investment Strategy”  [Matthew 6:19-24 – Do not store up treasures on earth]

November 1           Part 2:  “God’s Call to Faithful Philanthropy”  [Matthew 19:16-26 – The Rich young man]

November 8           Part 3: “God’s Expected Return on Investment”  [Matthew 25:14-30 – Parable of the talents]

November 15        Part 4: “God’s Multiplier Effect”  [Matthew 15:32-38 – The feeding of the four thousand]

See you in church!

Blessings,

Don

Fall Faire

Fall Faire is TOMORROW, October 24, 8 am - 1 pm!

Bring your friends, neighbors, cash and checks! We’re all set for a fantastic day! Bring the whole family!

The Silent Auction is packed with GREAT ITEMS! Unique gift items, hand crafted wood items, valuable services, beautiful gift baskets, original artwork by members and MUCH MORE! The bidding will end on Saturday, the 24th, at 12 noon.

We need folks to help clean up afterwards on Saturday, Oct. 24th, and folks with trucks and vans to take items to Community Aid. Thank you!!

UPDATED FALL FAIRE PARKING INFORMATION
 FOR ALL SSPC MEMBERS

All SSPC MEMBERS ARE NOW WELCOME TO PARK IN THE NORTH [L0WER] PARKING LOT WHICH IS THE PARKING LOT ON THE CARLISLE PIKE SIDE OF SSPC RATHER THAN THE WAUGH WILSON HOUSE PARKING LOT.

Why the change? For various reasons the past 4 + years the North [lower] parking lot has rarely been used by Fall Faire customers and will be a more convenient parking place for all SSPC members that are working or shopping at the Fall Faire. This parking change will also eliminate the need for the shuttle service to and from the Waugh Wilson House since it is no longer used for SSPC members parking during Fall Faire.

Thank you for your cooperation.

It’s Reformation Sunday, and the First Sunday in the Season of Commitment,
and a lot is happening here at SSPC!

Be sure to wear red
and/or plaid and come early.

At 8:45 am, we will gather in the cemetery.  Elder Fred Voigt will lead us in a reflection on the legacy of commitment of our ancestors in the faith whose remains are in our cemetery. Then we will process into worship behind our bagpiper, Jon Heller. Then, Elder Bill Resser will lead us in a Reflection on Commitment as we kick off our annual Season of Commitment. At the conclusion of worship, our piper will lead us out to enjoy fellowship with one another. See you in church!

BOO! CE is again holding the Annual Trunk-Or-Treat Spooktacular!

Join us this Sunday, October 25th, from 4 pm to 6 pm! We will gather in the gym parking lot, with decorated cars and vans and hand out candy to children and dog and cat treats for our animal lovers. We encourage all members of the congregation to come and join us, decorate your car and yourself! CE will provide all of the candy you need! We are gladly accepting donations of candy; look for the decorated basket in the Gathering Place!

SSPC’s 2027 Financial Narrative in support of our Season of Commitment is coming soon!

We want you to know the Commitment, Legacy and Endowment (CLE) and Finance Committees are working with Session to produce a 2027 Financial Narrative document to help communicate Silver Spring’s current plans for 2027 and the anticipated resources required to achieve them.

Recognizing that everything we do should focus on one or more of these areas - Loving and Praising God, Loving and Nurturing our Church Family and Loving and Serving our Neighbors, the narrative is organized via a framework that shows how our plans, programs and initiatives will, with your support, help us achieve our Mission in these important areas. The first six pages will provide a summary and the remaining pages will provide details regarding the purpose and 2027 goals of each committee of Session.

You should be receiving an email next week containing a link to the narrative. If you have any trouble viewing it, or need a hard copy, please contact Priscilla in the church office at priscillab@silverspring.org or 717-766-0204. We ask that you please review it as you prayerfully consider your commitment to continue Christ’s work at, and through, Silver Spring in 2027.

This Sunday’s Reflection on Commitment will be shared by Bill Resser. Don’t miss it!

We hope to see you in worship.

Reformed Theology Class this Sunday at 10:10 am - Room 204

Join us for the fourth class in a 6-part seminar on “What Makes us Reformed Christians, and How Did We Get this Way?”  This week, Rev. Dr. Don Wahlig explains how the Reformation got from John Calvin’s Geneva to the New World. Our focus will be the Reformation in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.  Together we will review how and why Scotch-Irish Presbyterians in Ulster migrated to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Central Pennsylvania, and points south. Along the way we will discover a fascinating connection to Alexander Craighead, whose sermon at our spring in November 1734 provides the starting point for SSPC.  Bring your coffee and we will see you there!

Giant Gift Cards - Help CE Raise Money for our Christian Education programs!

For many years, Cindy Corbin has administered the Giant food gift card program. We thank Cindy, as she will soon be handing it off to another member of the congregation. If you shop at Giant and sign up for gift cards, there’s no added cost. For every dollar, Christian Education gets five cents, so on a monthly basis, it’s $75 maybe $100. Christian Education appreciates your faith and trust in our programs and your support as always. Blessings

Laundry Ministry Update - Loads of love!

The SSPC Youth and CORE members continue their Laundry Ministry here at the church. We continue to collect quarters in the Gathering Place, and purchase laundry cards to hand out to patrons at local Morris Laundromats. We will be traveling to the Morris Laundromat in New Cumberland next time we go out to spread evangelism and hand out gift cards! We have donated 10 gift cards to New Hope Ministries to spread our gifts! Further Update - we were able to provide laundry gift cards to a brother in need recently. The Laundry Ministry continues to spread the Gospel!

Storyboard Ministry

The Youth have an easel in the Gathering Place with Post-it notes and markers for your prayer requests (no names, please). Each Sunday we collect the requests and pray for them at our CORE meetings. Whatever is on your heart, put it on the storyboard and we will pray for each request. If you see a request that you would like to take with you and pray for, feel free to do so. If you want to add one, please do as well. Our new box for answered prayers is beside the Storyboard. Feel free to place any answered prayers that you are thankful for in the box. God does indeed answer prayers! Blessings.

ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO SUPPORT SILVER SPRING IN 2026 – RMD & QCD REMINDER

Making a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) from your required minimum distribution (RMD) from your qualified retirement account in the remaining weeks of 2026 is an excellent and impactful way to support the ministry and mission of Silver Spring Presbyterian Church and to minimize your Federal Income Tax obligation. It is truly a win-win situation.

Depending on your age, the Federal Government requires that you take annual distributions (withdrawals) from your qualified 401(k) or individual retirement account (IRA). You must generally begin making RMD’s starting at age 73. The RMD age increases to age 75 for individuals born in 1960 or later. These withdrawals, which are referred to as RMD’s (taxable income), may be distributed directly from your IRAs to Silver Spring Presbyterian Church in the form of a QCD. A QCD reduces your annual RMD. In other words, using your RMD for charitable giving via a QCD to Silver Spring Presbyterian Church directly reduces your taxable income and helps support our programs.

You don't have to wait to age 73 to 75 to make a tax-free QCD from your 401(k) or IRA. The SECURE Act of 2019, as amended, extended the age for making RMDs but left the age for making QCDs at 70 ½ and you may distribute up to $111,000 annually tax-free to Silver Spring Presbyterian Church. QCDs are a great way to reduce your income and estate taxes.

Please consult the administrator of your retirement plan, along with your tax or financial advisor, to determine the best alternative for making your QCD to Silver Spring Presbyterian Church in 2026, annually in 2027 and beyond. It is generally a simple and easy process.

Please feel free to contact Jim Bogar at 717-608-8773 or jbogar@bogarlaw.com or Bill Resser at 717-580-7667 or billresser@gmail.com with any questions you may have.

Custodial Update

Daryl Rabold has agreed to assume the responsibilities of both part-time positions and will work each weekday, handling all custodial duties. We are grateful for Daryl’s willingness to step in and help meet our custodial needs while John continues his rehabilitation. Please join us in thanking Daryl for his willingness to serve during this time.
