"Jesus' Command, Love's Demand"

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY

This Sunday, Jesus responds to testing by the legal experts who ask him which law is the greatest. He answers by declaring what you and I know as the Great Commandment. Loving God with our whole being and loving our neighbor as ourself, he says, sums up all the law and all the prophets. [Philippians 3:3b-14]. Are these two separate commands? How do they relate to each other? Can we do one without the other?

Come on Sunday and find out!

Blessings,

Don

Fall Faire

Fall Faire is October 24, 8 am - 1 pm!

  • This Sunday is the last day to drop off items, either between services or after church.
  • Please take time to look at the Volunteer Board in the Gathering Place. There are still many opportunities to help out!
  • PIES ARE NEEDED: If you can bake a pie or two, please sign up on the board. Homemade is preferable, but store bought is okay too. Thank you!
  • Donations needed: nice boutique-y items – lamps, embroidered pillows, Christmas items, white elephant items, toys, children's books, jewelry, new items for Silent auction, etc. We are not taking small appliances, linens of any kind, books (except for children's books), and glassware. We are no longer accepting fine bone china of any pattern, as we have two gorgeous sets already. If you have decorative items or nice tools you want to donate, we will take those. If you are not sure, please check with Pastor Lisa Chase (Lisa@silverspring.org). Please email her photos.
  • Silent Auction: The Silent Auction has been moved to the parlor. Bidding will begin on Sunday, October 18th and will end 12 noon on October 24th.
  • We need folks to help clean up afterwards on Saturday, Oct. 24th, and folks with trucks and vans to take items to Community Aid.

HELP NEEDED THIS SUNDAY at noon after the Gathering to move tables into the rooms for FALL FAIRE. Many hands make light work. Let’s all pitch in to help.

Fall Faire Parking Instructions for All SSPC Members:

For all able-bodied SSPC members working and/or patronizing the Fall Faire, remote parking will be available at the Waugh-Wilson House, 404 Silver Spring Road. PLEASE NOTE, however, that, due to under-utilization the past several years, there will not be a shuttle service this year. If you are able, please park at Waugh-Wilson in the flat grassy area to the right as you enter the driveway. Please be sure to park perpendicular to Silver Spring Road and leave a wide center lane.

As you walk to the church property, please stay safely away from Silver Spring Road. For SSPC members who must park on church property, please use ONLY the lower (north) lot behind the Meeting House, entering from and exiting to Presbyterian Drive.

When driving on church property, PLEASE OBEY ALL TRAFFIC SIGNS, which are placed to maximize the safety of both members and patrons. For example, the road in front of the gym and Gathering Place will be one-way from the upper (south) parking lot (closest to the Manse) to the lower (north) parking lot behind the Meeting House.

Following these simple rules will ensure plenty of convenient parking for patrons in areas where attendants will be on duty to direct them. Thank you for your cooperation!

Sympathy

We extend our prayers and sympathy to Carole Cuthbertson for the death of John Cuthbertson, to the family of Lew Atkinson, and to the family of Gertrude Taylor who died this week. Please keep these families in your prayers.

There will be a memorial service for John Cuthbertson here at Silver Spring on Saturday, November 7th at 11 am with a luncheon to follow in the gym.

The Health Ministries Committee invites you to our continuing lecture series on Healthy Living.

Please join us on October 18 at 10:10 Room 204. If you are unable to attend, please join us on Zoom.

The lecture will be presented by our own Dr. Ken Harm. The title of the lecture is: “What lab tests and Preventative Health screenings should I have at my age?” We look forward to seeing you on Sunday for what is going to be a very interesting and informative discussion.

IT IS BEAUTIFUL!!

That is, the church campus. When you come to church on Sunday, please take notice to how nice the planting beds and shrubbery look. Thanks to a small team of volunteers, 70 plus shrubs were trimmed, weeds were pulled and a ten-foot trailer was filled to overflowing with branches from tree trimming. Multiple five-gallon buckets and 30-gallon containers were filled with weeds and trimmings from the shrubbery. It is amazing how much was accomplished by a few people in two days’ time.

A big thank you to all who helped out.

Notes prepared by Terry Reed for the Building and Grounds Committee.

Giant Grocery Gift Cards - Help CE Raise Money for our Christian Education programs!

For many years, Cindy Corbin has administered the Giant food gift card program. We thank Cindy, as she will soon be handing it off to another member of the congregation. If you shop at Giant and sign up for gift cards, there’s no added cost. For every dollar, Christian Education gets five cents, so on a monthly basis, it’s $75 maybe $100. Christian Education appreciates your faith and trust in our programs and your support as always. Blessings

Laundry Ministry Update - Loads of love!

The SSPC Youth and CORE members continue their Laundry Ministry here at the church. We continue to collect quarters in the Gathering Place, and purchase laundry cards to hand out to patrons at local Morris Laundromats. We will be traveling to the Morris Laundromat in New Cumberland next time we go out to spread evangelism and hand out gift cards! We have donated 10 gift cards to New Hope Ministries to spread our gifts! Further Update - we were able to provide laundry gift cards to a brother in need recently. The Laundry Ministry continues to spread the Gospel!

Storyboard Ministry

The Youth have an easel in the Gathering Place with Post-it notes and markers for your prayer requests (no names, please). Each Sunday we collect the requests and pray for them at our CORE meetings. Whatever is on your heart, put it on the storyboard and we will pray for each request. If you see a request that you would like to take with you and pray for, feel free to do so. If you want to add one, please do as well. Our new box for answered prayers is beside the Storyboard. Feel free to place any answered prayers that you are thankful for in the box. God does indeed answer prayers! Blessings.

Earth Care - Seasonal tip:

Change the filters on your furnace. This will make your furnace run more efficiently, thus saving fuel and money.
