“The 3 H's of Discipleship, Part 2
Humility: Openness to the Word"
| | |
This Sunday we continue the 3-part Sermon series called “The 3 H’s of Discipleship” focusing on Matthew’s instructions to his disciples before he sends them out into the world to be his witnesses. This week, Jesus counsels his disciples to expect resistance from those in the world whose fixed expectations of a messiah render them unwilling to see him for who he is and to receive the good news he brings. We, too, are Jesus’ witnesses in the world and we, too, face the challenge of sharing the gospel with those in the world whose minds are already made up about who and what Jesus is. How might we help open their minds? How can we make sure that our own minds are open and, especially on this Sunday, what role does humility play in our witness?
Come on Sunday and find out!
See you in church -
Blessings,
Don
Sermons in this Series, “The 3 H’s of Discipleship”:

Part 2 Humility: Openness to the Word [Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30]

Adult Sunday Morning Bible Study this Week
We will study Genesis 24:34–38, 42–49, 58–67. This week, we find ourselves on a threshold of discovery, and with the opportunity to linger in the foundational faith stories of Genesis. The stories of our ancestors reveal times of growth, struggle, vulnerability, and God’s life-giving ways to choose love and grace that strengthens the whole community. Come and learn, come and discuss.
Grounded in Faith
The next Grounded In Faith gathering will be on Saturday, July 8, from 10:30 – 12 at the new Panera Bread, on 6391 Carlisle Pike in Mechanicsburg. Please email Lisa if you plan on attending.
Family Movie Night on July 14th!
The CE Committee invites all SSPC families to the Chapel, on Friday night, July 14th, for a family movie and snacks. Bring your favorite lawn chair or a bean bag chair and enjoy the great family movie, "Because of Winn Dixie"! The movie will start promptly at 6:30 pm. The CE Committee will provide snacks and drinks for all. Remember going to the movie and getting boxes of Cracker jack, licorice whips, Good and Plenty? Come and get them again as we experience a great movie and memories from years gone by! No cost, donations appreciated! Sign up on Realm HERE or on the sign up sheet the Gathering Place. See you there!
Silver Spring Handy Helpers
Do you need some light repairs to your home, faucets replaced, decks/driveway cleaned, bushes pruned or low tree limbs removed, or some other repair that can be completed in a day or less. Do you need someone to assist you in moving to assisted living, hauling refuse to be recycled or hauling donations to a local charity? The Silver Spring Handy Helpers are here to help. There is no charge for their services. However, you are welcome to make a donation to the SSPC Mission Committee to help defray the cost of helping others—such as supplies/materials for repairs, “dump” fees, trash bags, gas for trucks and equipment rentals. Anonymity is protected. Feel free to get in contact with our Handy Helper coordinators Jonathan Service (717-732-0618) or Roy McLain (717-421-2065) to talk about Handy Helper assistance.
Chancel Flowers
Flowers are a wonderful way to commemorate a special event, honor a loved one, or praise the glory of God. A $40 contribution will provide chancel flowers on a Sunday morning. Sign up sheets are on the bulletin board in the hallway by the drinking fountain. The following weeks are currently available to order flowers: July 16, August 13, August 20 and August 27. Please prayerfully consider donating flowers so that we can continue this beautiful tradition.
Lunchtime Dining Out
We will be gathering for lunch on Thursday, July 13th at 11:30 am at Red Lobster, 4711 Carlisle Pike, Hampden Township. Please see the sign up sheet in the Gathering Place, or contact Pastor Lisa Chase. We hope to see you there!

Earth Care - The Right Way
If you vacation at the beach, pick up any trash, cans, bottles around you.
If you vacation in the mountains or hills, pick up any trash around you.
Leave the area cleaner than you found it upon arrival. It is the right thing to do and the earth will thank you.

ROAR Summer Project
Due to the lack of adequate housing possibilities for the Team and other issues, the ROAR trip to Farmington, Maine has been canceled for this year. Hopefully we will be able to restart this event in August of 2024.
In lieu of the trip to Maine the Mission Committee has committed to be part of the construction crew that will build 15 tiny homes at the Veterans Village in Harrisburg. This project was introduced to SSPC by Steve Rexford about a year ago. Ground breaking ceremonies were held on June 05, 2023. The actual start time for construction of the homes has not been determined but SSPC ROAR Team volunteers will build at least one of the homes.
A ROAR Team is not a group of specific skilled carpenters. The ‘Team’ is made up of volunteers of all skill levels who become the hands and feet of our savior Jesus Christ, as we minister to people in need.
If you are interested in being a part of this ROAR Team please respond by email to tsreed@verizon.net. These homes are not very large at 210 square feet so we can not have too many people on site each day. We will rotate volunteers as the project needs indicate.
Notes prepared by Terry Reed for the Mission Committee

Thank You
Dear Silver Spring,
I wanted to thank you for the cards that were sent to my family after the loss of my Grandmother. Thank you for the prayers and concern that were said. We appreciate it and are grateful for our church family. May God's peace be with you.
Thank you, Meri and Jackson Beck and RJ Holt and Whitney Haunstein
Heartfelt thanks to my church family for all of your expressions of sympathy on the unexpected passing of my beloved husband, David. I definitely feel wrapped in God's love and your support.
Nancy Kauhl
Many thanks and appreciation to our SS church family for your prayers, cards and care following the passing of our son, Lee. Also, we are very grateful for the cards and outreach received following Judy's spine surgery on May 31. Recovery is going well, slow but steady. We are truly blessed to feel so comforted and supported by this church congregation.
Blessings, Judy and Eric Perrine
