The Fundamentals of Discipleship, Part 4:

Look (to one another)

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY

This Sunday we conclude our 4-part sermon series based on the Gospel of John called "The Fundamentals of Discipleship".  In John 17:20-26. Jesus prays to his father shortly before his looming arrest and crucifixion. He prays that God will keep his followers united in love as a sign to the world that Christ is in them, and Christ and God are one. How do we become more unified as Christians? What might happen if we did?

Come on Sunday and find out!

See you in church -

Pentecost 2025

Make an impact for young people through the Pentecost Offering at Silver Spring on Sunday, June 8.

Support young people nationally, internationally and even in our own community through ministries of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). We retain 40% of the offering our congregation receives to help children, youth and young adults in our own community.

When you give to the Pentecost Offering, you support ministries like:

  • The Presbyterian Youth Triennium, which is happening this summer for youth all across the country. The impact this event has on the faith of the youth who participate can’t be understated.
  • The Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) program, a faith-based year of service accompanying agencies nationally and internationally that work to address the root causes of poverty and reconciliation. Many YAVs go on to become ministers in the PC(USA) and almost all of them find meaningful work in their community that does the work of Christ.
  • The Educate a Child Transform the World national initiative, which seeks to improve the quality of public education for children in the U.S. and globally so that all God’s children may grow into the fullness of life.
  • Our own community and efforts to help children, youth and young adults thrive.

Keep our Silver Spring Pentecost tradition alive and wear red on June 8!

New Youth Ministry

The SSPC Youth started a new ministry called the Storyboard Ministry! Here is how it works: The Youth have placed an easel in the Gathering Place, along with Post-it notes and markers. Fill out a Post-it note with a prayer request or hope (no names, please) and each Sunday we will collect the requests and pray for them at our CORE meetings. Whatever is on your heart, put it on the storyboard and we will pray for each request.

Another New Ministry from SSPC Youth!

The SSPC Youth and CORE members are pleased to announce a second new ministry here at SSPC. Inspired by our Meal with a Mission recent success with gathering laundry pods for Downtown Daily Bread, the new ministry is called Laundry Ministry. Starting on Sunday, June 1st, a large container will be placed in the Gathering Place. We are asking the congregation to put a quarter in there every time you pass by. When we get about $20 or more in quarters, the youth will take them to a local laundromat and give them to patrons there, as outreach and taking our love for each other into our community. We appreciate the congregation's support of our efforts and as always, your prayers. "And they will know we are Christians by our love, by our love"!

Gathering Video for this Week

This week's video is from contemporary Christian group, Selah. The song is titled "I'd Rather Have Jesus". It talks about wanting to have Jesus in our life more than anything else, about redemption and finding Jesus no matter the circumstances in your life. It's from the movie "The Firing Squad". Come and view it at10:55 or stay for an encore performance after the Benediction.

Monday Bible Study - June 2

All are invited to join this unique study. We meet 1 pm to 3 pm on the second and fourth Mondays of the month. We continue a new study of Revelation as we watch sessions by Rev. Gary Hamrick, from Leesburg, Virginia. Come and learn, come and discuss. This class is for adults from 18 to 99!

Dining Out Pot Luck - Monday, June 16th

The Lunch Bunch/Dining Out groups will have a combined Pot-luck picnic on Monday, June 16th at 5:30 pm at the Waugh Wilson Retreat Center. Grilled hamburgers/hot dogs will be provided. A sign-up sheet will be in the Gathering Place or you can contact Chris Winning (717) 439-0521. All are welcome! Yes, even if you haven't joined the groups previously!

Young Adults Group, the Pathfinders!

New in 2025, CE and young leaders from SSPC have begun a new group for young adults over 18. For further information, contact Ty Headley. This group is for young adults 19 and older, single or married! This new effort is specifically for our young adults and they are leading this effort and charting their own course. Watch for new events being planned!

Young Families Christian Education Group

Also new in 2025, CE has begun a new effort for our young families. We are meeting one Sunday a month with young families for lunch and discussion. We are planning one or more events this summer featuring earth care, food, fun and fellowship built for our young families. All interested families can contact Scott Pepperman at puppytrainer52@aol.com or 717-389-5100 for more information.

Discount cards to support the SSPC youth

The SSPC Youth have launched a new effort to raise additional funds for our Christian Education programs. Here's how it works: The Discount Cards feature savings from 15 local and national programs, like restaurants, family fun centers and service organizations. (For example, Sal's Pizza in Mechanicsburg, Dad's Garage in Mechanicsburg, The Bagel Boutique in Mechanicsburg, Trindle Bowling Alley in Camp Hill, and Jiffy Lube in Mechanicsburg). The card is usable for one year, and can be used over and over, increasing your savings each time you visit. Each card costs $15 and can easily be paid for in just several visits to one of the featured businesses. Reach out to me at puppytrainer52@aol.com or call me at 717-389-5100 to request a card or cards. Make out a check to SSPC and drop it off at the office. For each card we sell, the SSPC Christian Education program will make $10, and we hope to sell 200 cards in 2025. The CE Youth appreciate your support of our efforts and your prayers.

Blessings, Scott Pepperman and Drew Crompton.

SSPC Name Badges

"At our Baptism, God called us by name!" How wonderful it is to be called by our name, especially on a Sunday morning in church! As we invite guests and new members into our church, it would be nice to have them know our names. If you have a name badge, I challenge you to wear it; if not, contact me and I will arrange to get you one. If you are a new member, let me know and I will get you one. Simply contact me, Scott Pepperman, at puppytrainer52@aol.com. The cost for each badge is $6. Once you receive your badge, simply give a check to the church office made out to "SSPC". If you lost your badge or magnet let me know and I will order a replacement.

Earth Care - ATTENTION:

Remember our special guest this week during the Sunday School hour at 10:10 am in Room 204.

Rev. Kevin Long will be speaking on the topic of Environmental Justice. Please join us!

Mission

ROAR Summer Mission Trip

Instead of going north to Maine in August the ROAR Team will be heading south to Asheville, North Carolina for the week of Sunday, August 03 through Saturday, August 09, 2025 . We will be working with Asheville Habitat For Humanity building homes for people in need and/or rebuilding properties damaged by Hurricane Hellene in September of 2024. You do not need to be a skilled builder to be a part of the August ROAR Team, all you need is a willing heart to be the hands and feet of Jesus as we minister to our neighbors, some of whom lost all their worldly goods last fall. A ROAR Team is not a specific, skilled group of people. A ROAR Team is a group of volunteers gathered together as witnesses of God’s love, bringing hope to those in need.

If you are interested in being part of the August ROAR Team or need more information, please contact Terry Reed at 717-766-2714, tsreed@verizon.net, or see him at church.
