"The Power of Prayer"

Part I - The Mechanics

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY

It started with a simple request: "Lord, teach us to pray." What followed was a prayer most of us know by heart - The Lord's Prayer. Many of us learned it as children, spoken in schools (back in the day!), Sunday school, and church, maybe even before we fully understood what we were saying. But these words have shaped the way the faithful have spoken to God for centuries.

This Sunday, we are kicking off a two-part series called the "Power of Prayer." This Sunday's sermon will look at the mechanics of prayer, with special focus on intention, and next Sunday's sermon will focus on stories from our own congregation featuring answered prayer. If you would like to share a story of answered prayer in your life, please email it to Pastor Lisa by Wednesday, July 30th. We are creating a pamphlet that will go along with next week's bulletin on the stories of answered prayer from our congregation, and a couple of my own.

See you on Sunday!

General Announcements

Dear congregation:

For this week and next, I am doing a two-part sermon series on the power of prayer. On July 27, I will present the mechanics of prayer in a format that I have found to be helpful. Next Sunday, I’ll give examples of answered prayer. I would love to share some of your stories of answered prayer in the sermon. You can give me your name or make it anonymous. I will probably be able to share two or three stories. I have a few of my own stories to share, but I would really love to hear yours and share them if you are open to that. Please email me at lisa@silverspring.org no later than Wednesday, July 30th. We are printing an insert to accompany the bulletin featuring these stories.Thank you.

Another New Ministry from SSPC Youth: Update!

The SSPC Youth and CORE members are pleased to announce a second new ministry here at SSPC. Inspired by our Meal with a Mission success with gathering laundry pods for Downtown Daily Bread, the new ministry is called Laundry Ministry. A large container is in the Gathering Place for your quarters every time you pass by. When we get about $25 or more in quarters, the youth will take them to a local laundromat and give them to patrons as outreach and taking our love for each other into our community. We appreciate the congregation's support of our efforts and as always, your prayers. UPDATE - We traveled to Morris Laundromat on Saturday morning, July 19th and reached out to six different patrons. We offered a laundry card and handed out free laundry pods. We were able to greet them and tell them who we represented. We met with great support to keep up the ministry. One patron used to work with Community Aid and knew who we represented and was very complimentary of the effort, the youth and SSPC. Thanks to Rev. Lisa Chase, Morgan Lenk, Kate Hall, and Ally (Morgan's friend) for accompanying me, we will go back when we gather more quarters. Blessings!

Monday Bible Study, July 28th

Manna Project

Over 17 years ago, SSPC began to welcome newcomers through the Manna Project. Each year, volunteers sign up to welcome visitors with a loaf of bread and to share information about SSPC along with what the church means to them. Many visitors have joined our church family because of a Manna Visit. Please consider participating in this project to welcome our new visitors. There is a new sign-up sheet in the Gathering Place. For any questions, please contact Shannon Leary at shanlear17@gmail.com.

Storyboard Ministry

The SSPC Youth started a new ministry called the Storyboard Ministry! Here is how it works: The Youth have an easel in the Gathering Place with Post-it notes and markers. Fill out a Post-it note with a prayer request or hope (no names, please) and each Sunday we will collect the requests and pray for them at our CORE meetings. Whatever is on your heart, put it on the storyboard and we will pray for each request. Update: We continue to pray each week around the Storyboard, thanks to members of the congregation who continue to add requests!

SESSION HIGHLIGHTS

THIS MONTH

- The Session voted unanimously to hire Austin Shoop as SSPC's next Youth Director. Austin started July 1 and can be reached at austin@silverspring.org. Many thanks to Drew Crompton and the search team working on behalf of the Personnel Committee. Please congratulate Austin!

- Vacation Bible School was a success! The CE Committee, Pastor Lisa Chase, and numerous volunteers did fine work leading the children through biblical examples of divine rescue. The kids and volunteers all had a terrific time, and learned how God rescues his children throughout scripture, especially in Jesus Christ!

- The Fellowship Committee helped us celebrate both mothers and fathers this past month with special receptions between the two Worship services. Thanks to our Fun-Loving Fellowship folks!
